The Mercury Cars Guide : January 10th 2009

NeilMcDonald reports. like. I T looks a little grainy but this computer-generated rendering gives you a good idea of what the 2010 Toyota Prado looks The newcomer is close in size to the current model but is expected to gain some technology updates to keep it ahead of its key competitors like the Mitsubishi Pajero, Ford Territory and Holden Captiva. The company is also aiming to reduce C02 emission levels in its diesel and petrol engines, particu- larly for the European market where the wagon is one of Toyota’s most popular sellers. Reducing weight has also been targeted. Despite the photo, Toyota Austra- lia spokesman, Mike Breen, says no details have officially been revealed about the new car. ‘‘But it will be updated by the end of the year,’’ he says. ‘‘I would expect Australia to get it late this year.’’ Various Japanese magazines have attempted to generate images of the car but Breen says very few people have actually seen the finished re- sult. Toyota Japan is believed to be tossingup whether toshowthe car at the Geneva Motor Show in March or hold on for the huge Tokyo Motor Show later this year. Like the new Nissan Patrol, the Prado has gained a few extra curves and the interior is believed to have gone more upmarket. Borrowing some cues from the Kluger, the current wagon’s boxy look has been softened, with less aggressive wheel-arch bulges and a more pronounced kink in the rear side window. At the front the grille now blends into the bumper line. The European-designed Prado is one of Toyota’s consistently good sellers. In the Australian market, it was the country’s best selling off-roader last year. Before it was launched, Toyota undertook extensive local develop- ment work on the car’s suspension. The new models are tipped to get tougher Australia-specification sus- pensions as well. LESS BOXY: The first indication of what the new-generation Toyota Prado will look like. The Prado’s success was closely followed by the Kluger, which man- aged to sell more than 13,000. The current model Prado was launched in February 2003 and since then more than 90,000 have been sold. The model was first released in Japan in 2002. WINNINGCARS. SPOTONPRICES.
