I Scuttle shake? That’s a term usually applied to the shivering you get in an insufficiently braced convertible. It can be applied to Vespas because they have that unique monocoque steel body but of course it’s not a term that’s really ever needed. Vespas offer excellent body integrity, even with a 300cc en- gine putting out a not inconsider- able 15.8kW at 7500rpm. Scuttle shake? Not here. I expected that. What I didn’t expect was that the small wheels didn’t worry me. I can still remember my first ride on a scooter—I think it was a Lambretta—around inner-city back streets. Every drain seemed to shake the machine and make me won- der if I was about to be bucked off. Despite the fact that Super’s wheels are only twelve inches there was no suggestion of any- thing like that, even though we were riding inner-city streets again. Suspension technology has im- proved, clearly. So has propulsion technology. That old Lambretta had a VESPA GTS300 SUPER Available now at Motorworks smelly, smoky and noisy two- stroke engine, while the GTS300 is powered by a clean new- generation four-stroke engine that produces no noticeable smell, smoke or noise except for a throaty little drawl when you rev it hard. Vespa has created a long line of sporty scooters during its 62-year existence. The GTS Super is the 145th 248 Argyle Street Hobart Ph 6234 3888 www.motorworks.com.au model in Vespa history, and joins the 1955 Vespa GS, 1964 180 SS, 1965 90 SS, 1972 200 Rally, 1976 Vespa ET3, and the 1985 T5 ‘‘Pole Position’’ on the roll call of sporty Vespas. With a displacement of 278cc, the GTS Super is a variant of the long-running and highly success- ful GTS250ie. SPORTY: The new-look Vespa Gts300 is unashamedly retro in design. Even the steepest beachside Visually it is separated from the 250 by a chromed-rear grab- rail, vented-rear quarter-panel, two-tone alloy rims, new instru- ment graphics and a traditional seat with white piping. Thewhole look is unashamedly retro. This is clever marketing, of course. If you want a modern scooter that also looks modern, there is a bewildering choice of brands and styles on the market. And a lot of people want those traditional looks. The GTS300 still has all the other features which have made the GTS250ie, which continues in the line-up, such a success. That includes a twist-and-go automatic transmission, twin- disc brakes, preload adjustable shock absorbers, that unique metal-bodied frame and a low- emission, environmentally friendly, fuel-injected engine. The difference is an increased bore and stroke. The GTS300’s single-cylinder liquid-cooled powerplant has 22.3Nm of torque as against the 250’s 20Nm and delivers it at lower rpm. Among other things that means more flexibility for city commuting. Out on Sydney’s notoriously bumpy and traffic-riddled streets, the extra power proved welcome and the suspension did what you want suspension to do — its work, without reminding you of its existence. climbs didn’t faze the GTS300, although I must admit that we were all one up. It might have been different if we’d had pillions, but then some of those streets strain good-sized motorcycles. I honestly can’t see that you’d have problems even in the worst conditions. Even the tyres are reassuringly grippy. But of course there’s always something that’s less than ideal. On the GTS300 Super it’s the size of the luggage space under the seat. This is too small to take a full- face helmet. That’s annoying, but fortunate- ly the GTS has a couple of helmet ‘‘hooks’’ under the seat soyou can still secure your bash hats. Vespa brand manager Simon Gloyne says from the day they introduced the Vespa GTS250ie in October 2005 it has been Austra- lia’s favourite 250cc scooter by a long shot. ‘‘The addition of the new GTS300 provides an option for owners seeking more perfor- mance and are willing to forego the GTS250’s convenient carry rack,’’ Mr Gloyne said. The scooter is hard to fault, and the price is pretty competitive as well for what you get. If you’ve ever fancied giving Audrey a lift (or fancied yourself as Audrey) it’s an attractive choice.
