The Mercury Cars Guide : January 31st 2009
2— CARSguide Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, January 31, 2009 Kia’s Korean EUOR-STYLE: The 2009 Kia Cerato SLi looks like it’s fresh out of Europe. Takeavery close look at the Kia Cerato —removethebadgesandyou’d almost think itwasapremiumGermansmall car. NeilMcDonaldreports considering it was the work of Kia’s Frankfurt-based global design chief Peter Schreyer. A quick look at his CV and T you understand how Kia’s stepped out of Korea and right into Europe. Schreyer penned the TT sportscar while he was at Audi, as well as the A4 Avant and A3. Now he’s responsible for Kia’s new global look and the Cerato sedan is the result. The front design is part of Kia’s new ‘‘family face’’ and you can expect to see it on all future models. Kia Australia national sales and marketing chief Steve Watt said the Cerato is a ‘‘transformation vehicle’’. ‘‘It will shift consumer thinking of our cars as budget cars,’’ he said. However, Watt admits it will be a challenge to convince HE accomplished de- sign of the Kia Cerato screams ‘‘European’’, which is no surprise buyers that the Cerato is a viable rival to the small car sales leaders. ‘‘Most people don’t realise how sophisticated Kia has become,’’ he said. ‘‘They’re aware we make wallet-friendly cars and aware we sponsor the Australian Open but that’s about it.’’ Watt believes that once word gets out, the Cerato could sell as many as 1200 a month ‘‘like the i30’’. New President and CEO Terry Im said he’s aiming for 4000 sales of the Cerato S and SLi this year — double the Cerato numbers last year. The sharply-styled, 2.0-litre, front-drive sedan is clearly taking aim at the competitive small car segment. Company executives say they want to challenge the top three small cars, the Toyota Corolla, Mazda3 and Mitsu- bishi Lancer, but on those sales forecasts they admit they will still be chasing rather than challenging. However, both Im and Watt are hopeful the Cerato will banish Kia’s budget-brand im- age even though theS starts at $18,990 — the low end of the small car chain. The S gets air conditioning, 15-inch steel wheels, electric windows/mirrors, six air- bags, active front headrests, central locking, 60/40 split fold rear seatbacks, anti-skid brakes with brake assist, MP3 compatible stereo, auxiliary input and USB input with iPod compatibility. The S misses out on electro- nic stability control but it can be added for an extra $1000, which also throws in cruise control and remote audio con- trols. The $22,990 SLi gets all the fruit with electronic stability control, traction control, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, cruise control, 17-inch alloys, front foglights, climate control air condition- ing, rear parking sensors and trip computer. A four-speed sequential EYE-CATCHING: Kia’s Cerato SLi is a step foward for The Korean company. The engine puts out 115kW auto is a $2000 option and a interior leather pack is also planned. Both models get a full size spare, an alloy one for the SLi. Kia expects about 40 per cent of buyers to opt for the SLi. Both models get the new Theta II twin-cam 2.0-litre four cylinder with continuously variable valve timing. at 6200 revs and 194Nm at 4300 revs. The engine delivers a com- bined fuel economy figure of 7.8 litres/100km and runs on regular unleaded. Apart from the new design and lift in quality, the Kia’s strengths remain focused on the dollar. TheCeratomakesextensive use of high-strength steel.
