He was thinking about their dual roles, on the tar and on the gravel (few of them will happily go further bush than a made dirt road). But many of them are dressed-up (or down, depend- ing whether you’re thinking of height of suspension or amount of bodywork) ver- sions of other bikes, or at least derive their engine from or share it with quite a different machine. Honda’s other dual sports machine, the Varadero, gets its engine from the Fire- Storm. The BMW chookies’ en- gines are a family matter. The Suzuki V-Strom, Moto Guzzi’s Stelvio, the Benelli TreK and even Kawasaki’s Versys all derived their en- gines from other bikes. The Tranny shares its power plant with the Deau- ville tourer. Does this compromise the bikes? Well, not necessarily. In the case of the Transalp the new engine (boosted to 680 cc) does the job very well even though you’d probably give itabitmorepowerifyou started from scratch. It delivers what it has very smoothly and effectively, but runs out of puff towards the top end. As well as the increased capacity there have been many other changes to the ECENTLY I was chatting about the Transalp with a bloke who’d just bike including far better- looking bodywork, a slimmer but still comfortable seat which sets up a relaxed rid- ing position with knees tucked pleasantly inwards and simple but effective in- strumentation. Unfortunately the front wheel is down to 19 inches from 21, emphasising that the bike is more for on than off- tar use. That’s reinforced by the other end of the bike, as well, where the Pro-Link shock is somewhat over-damped for really poor surfaces. But then you’d be looking at a more specialised bike for those kinds of surfaces, prob- ably. The five-speed gearbox of- fers the usual faultless Honda performance, and a lower seat is available. Brakes are not overly powerful but pleasantly pro- gressive. Once on the road, the Transalp supplies the usual fuss-free Honda package. Above all the bike is re- markably easy and fuss-free to ride. That makes the Tranny a terrific tourer which will take you—and your pillion, should you choose to travel two up — through a whole day without tiring you undu- ly. All up, then, the Transalp is a bike that’s easy to like. It’s a good package with a price that would make it a convincing winner if it weren’t for the fact that Suzu- ki’s V-Strom 650 is even cheaper — and it has ABS. That makes it a tough call, but I could see potential buyers going either way. I’d certainly have trouble deciding, primarily because I do like ABS—but I also like the looks of the Transalp much more than the Suzu- ki’s, and I find it significantly more comfortable.
