The Mercury Cars Guide : February 14th 2009
10— CARSguide Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, February 14, 2009 tween a Land Rover Discov- ery 3 diesel or a new ’09 model Nissan Patrol diesel. Should he wait until the new Patrol comes out, or buy the Discovery 3? Anna Cleever email He should definitely wait and at least drive the new Patrol. BUY AT LIBERTY I AM looking at buying a Subaru Liberty Heritage 2.5i MY08 with manual transmission, an ’09-plated car. Is there anything I should know about this car? My research shows that this is a solid, reliable car with good resale value, and I haven’t come across any mentions of flaws. Natasha Leary email The Liberty is one of the best cars in the class with no known faults. But it is coming up for a total over- haul later this year so getting a bit older than its rivals from Honda and Mazda. C firstname.lastname@example.org with GRAHAM SMITH FOUR OR REAR OULD you please ad- vise my options be- tween a Ford Terri- tory and Toyota Prado? Whats the difference between a four-wheel drive and rear- wheel drive. Anthony email If you are not going ’seri- ously’ off-road, or towing a boatupawet launch ramp, you don’t need a four- wheel drive. You are choosing be- tween an SUV wagon, that’s basically a station wagon, and a serious off- roader. If you only want the vehicle for family use around the suburbs, go with the Territory. UTES IN A POD C OULD you please tell mewhat the difference is between the Colora- do Diesel ute and the Isuzu D-Max ute. They both appear the same in every way but I beleive that they come out of differ- ent factories. John Zealley email Theyareclones of thesame vehicle, with a name change at Holden after a change of distribution for Australia. They are both built in Thailand and Holden asked us to remember that it builds and supplies its petrol engine. Patrol for a new four-wheel drive M Y husband is buy- ing a four-wheel drive, choosing be- VETTE-STYLE BENZ L OOKING through the Carsguide I see a nice specialontheSLRStir- ling Moss Benz. Finally someone sat the driver a ways back and gave the car a hood worthy of a nice looking car. Owning a Corvette myself, I find a few things on the Benz similar to a ’70s ’Vette. Seating position — the same. Huge bonnet, scoops in the guards—even the nose is the same side view. I think the Benz would drive somewhat better than a Vette. It’s a pity the only people who ever get to own such pieces of art usually buy, I would think, as an invest- ment or to have in their collection. I hope I’m wrong. Ken Gatenby email The keys to good design in sports cars have not really changed since the 1930s. Sad that none of the Stirling Moss cars will come to Australia, but we’re sure some of them will be driven quite hard on private tracks in Europe. SUV SELECTION I AM looking to buy a seven-seater SUV. The choice is between a Holden Captiva or the Hyun- dai Sante Fe. I ama Holden man but the Santa Fe does have some good features, but I am con- cerned about resale. Which do you think’s better? Colin Murphy email They are pretty close but we prefer the Captiva as a drive. On resale, they are likely to be quite close. So it comes down to your personal preference. FREEWAY CRUISE I DO a lot of freeway driving and am looking at cars around the $20,000-mark that have cruise control or can have it added. I have been looking around at a few different cars and one of the better deals I have been offered is a 2009 Mitsu- bishi Lancer hatchback for $21,440 driveaway, with a 5/10 year warranty, cruise control and metallic paint. I was therefore wondering if youthink that the Lancer is a good car and whether there C are any other cars in the same price range that I should be considering? Natasha Main email The Lancer is a good car and one of the newest in the class. But check on the deal as the really good prices are all for 2008 stock. MY FIRST LANCER OULD I please get your opinion with re- gard to a first car my 18-year-old son is looking at. Hehas about $9000 to spend and has his mind set on a Mitsubishi Lancer around 1999 to 2001. Do you think this car is ideal given he is looking for economic fuel consumption? Are there any known design problems to be aware of? Would you suggest any- thing else? John Hayhurst email The Lancer ticks all the right boxes and will give better value than a Toyota Corolla, which is much the same and the benchmark in the class.
