BENEFITRUN Sat 21/2/2009 TICKS ALLBOXES: Yamaha’s limited edition VMax has more road presence than a Kenworth. ThenewYamahaVMaxhasextraordinary acceleratingpowerandmanyother dazzling attributes yourmateswouldlove My mate was seriously annoyed. He has a Rocket III Triumph and he wanted to see the new contender for top powerhouse on the block, Yamaha’s VMax. He was dark because I’d ridden the bike but hadn’t come by his house. Even explaining that Yamaha would only let the bike out under direct supervision didn’t help. Finally I’d had enough. ‘‘Don’t tell me I had to show you the bike,’’ I said. ‘‘When you’re on a VMax you don’t have to do anything.’’ This is true. It’s an outstanding motorcycle whichever way you look at it. The cylinder angle of the vee four has been reduced from 70 degrees on the original 1984 VMax to 65 degrees, but that’s about the only thing that’s shrunk. Just about every conceivable statistic has gone up — and how. Capacity, for instance, is up by 40 per cent, courtesy of an increase in stroke from 76mm to 90mm. But there’s a perfectly reasonable argument that comparisons are useless. After all, this bike is not just big but state-of-the-art in every way. If you can think of it there’s a good chance it has it. Slipper clutch? Check. Variable air intake? Check. Electronically controlled throttle? Check. Variable exhaust opening? Check. Anti-lock braking? Check. Multiple-microprocessor Electronic Control Unit? Check. And so on. But here are the only three things you really need to knowif you want to talk to your mates about the 2009 VMax. It puts out 200 horsepower. It gets from a standstill to 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds. And it has more road presence than a Kenworth. Veryfew bikes can matchthe poweroutput. The Kawasaki ZX-14 does, but it’s neverthe- less a couple of tenths of a second slower to 100 km/h. There is no bike that Iknowof that will match, nevermindbetter, the acceleration the VMax offers. As for cars, Porsche’s 911 GT2, with its twin variable geometry turbo- chargers and power output of 520 horses, takes a full second longer to get to 100 km/h — 3.7 seconds. Should you be one of the very few people to actually have a chance of getting hold of one of these limited edition motorcycles there are a few more things you’ll want to know. One of the first things you notice is the small numbered plaque. Yes, this is a genuine limited edition. Then, to your surprise, you’ll discover that this power monster is no less handy than any other motorcycle. Unlike some of the current crop of truly big bikes, the VMax wears its size comfortably. Get rolling, and the 50/50 front and rear balance plus all the other little tweaks come together to add to the reassurance. Yamaha tried something like a dozen different frame designs before settling on this one. Punch up to speed—and the choice of that with PETER THOEMING term is deliberate—and you realise that the engine is not only brutally powerful. It is also almost infinitely flexible, due partly to the huge power output and partly to one of the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) computers which compares a multitude of factors a thousand times a second. I don’t think it would be possible to catch the ECU out. I tried, snapping the throttle open at moderate speeds only to find that the bike simply accelerated away and my licence evaporated even faster. No, of course I’d never do anything illegal — but the VMax would make it terribly easy to do so. Every day. Every minute, really. Power, as they say, is nothing without control. The bike’s riding position is relaxed and secure at the same time. Pegs are high, and the seat has a backrest built in. This proves to be handy once you unleash the vee four and the beast leaps forward. Above 6000 rpm, when the air intakes are shortened, the bike simply snaps forward. The hydraulic clutch and the gearbox, meanwhile, are impeccable. Handling is secure but not especially slow in corners — the bike does not need to be wrestled down. Cornering clearance is good. The brakes are nothing short of superb, both powerful and controllable. I’ve suffered snappy brakes a bit lately, so I was impressed. Is this bike a cruiser? Well, at 1700mm the wheelbase matches that of Harley-Davidson’s Softail Custom or Night Train — it’s 75mm longer than an Electra Glide’s. It weighs 314kg, rake is a flat 59 degrees and trail a mighty 148mm. It’s styled like a cruiser, as well, and although Yamaha calls it an Intelligent Monster the company clearly thinks of it as a cruiser—in the US, it’s being sold as a Star model, not a Yamaha. Star is the cruiser brand. So if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and gets called a duck — is it a duck? I’ll leave the last word to my mate who was so annoyed that I hadn’t brought the bike around to show him. ‘‘A duck?’’ he said. ‘‘A duck? No, of course it’s not a duck. It’s the ultimate power cruiser!’’ 07 model, red, V racks, Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, February 14, 2009 Outstanding motorcycle now better than ever AT A GLANCE YAMAHA VMAX Price: $31,299 (plus on-road charges) Warranty:Twoyears, unlimited distance Power: 147.2kW(200 PS)@9000rpm Torque: 167Nm@6500rpm Engine: Liquid cooled 65 degree vee four,4valves per cylinderDOHC,fuel injection and digital ignition Bore x stroke: 90x66mm Displacement: 1679 cc Transmission: 5 speed, hydraulic wet multi plate / slipper clutch, final drive by shaft Suspension: Front, 52mmtelescopic fork, fully adjustable, travel 120mm.
