The most common story about B the style has it that when owners of American motorcycles needed to change their rear tyres many decades ago, the rear mudguard featured a hinge near its centre that would flip up to make room for the tyre to be removed. At some point an enterprising rider decided to permanently removethe hinged rear portion of the guard. That shortened it just like the bobbed haircuts popular during those days. And of course once you start something, like pulling stuff off your bike, it’s hard to stop. The tradition of stripping it down to the bike’s bare essence and celebrating its simpler forms —making a bobber—had begun. Bobbers are related to chop- pers in that they both represent a minimalist approach, where everything that’s seen to be un- necessary is stripped from the bike. This includes the characteris- tic shortened (‘‘bobbed’’) rear fender and, quite often, a rigid frame. They also usually feature a fat front tyre and a tractor-type seat, as well as a minimal front guard, small fuel tank and tidy, hidden electrics. Bobbers, so says online refer- ence Wikipedia, ‘‘often lack most of the chopper’s chromed parts and elongated forks. Thus, bob- bers are fairly easy to create from stock motorcycles and are gener- ally hand built’’. The W650 Custom ‘‘Bobber- sake’’ from Sydney bespoke bike builders Deus Ex Machina that we rode for this story is a very good example of a bobber. ‘‘The w650 twin, bevel gear . . . superb Japanese engineering in one of the most handsome en- OBBERS came out of California at about the same time that chop- pers first reached our neutral and something else) and that’s it. Controls are pretty much as they were on the donor bike, but the handgrips have been replaced with stylish fat, brown plastic ones. with PETER THOEMING gines made,’’ according to the Deus website. ‘‘Deus custom peanut tank fin- ished in matt black, frame mods, clip-on bars, Wellington rearset pegs, Daytona light kit (finished in matt black), Nitroheads seat, heat-tape wrapped two into one pipe and a vintage Firestone rear tyre (modern compound).’’ This bike has the 733 cc kit from Beet Racing fitted, and would cost $20,500 as pictured - although the final price depends on specification and options. Thefirst thingyou notice about the W650 Custom is how small it is. The donor bike isn’t a big machine to start with, but strip- ping it back makes it seem positively tiny. The extremely low tractor-type seat helps here, too. Jump on, and you’ll find a seating position that is probably different from anything you’ve ever tried. Upright torso, relaxed reach to the bars — but feet slightly forward and knees very high. You don’t really sit on this bobber, you squat on it. Whichis not asbadas it sounds —but you’ll never mistake it for any other bike’s riding position. The small, sprung seat is re- markably comfortable. The seat needs to be sprung because the bike does, indeed, have a hardtail frame — no suspension on the back. This is achieved simply by removing the original rear frame and bolting on anewone, simpler and sans shocks. Instrumentation is also mini- mal — a tiny speedo and just three warning lights (high beam, Handling is not all that differ- ent from any older mid-sized bike’s until you hit a bump. The frame and steering geome- try have been carefully calculated to reduce the effect of the hardtail as much as possible, but without shock absorption and then with- out damping, things can get lively at the back. The bobber is great fun to hoot around on and it draws every- one’s eye. Unfortunately, this bike is not legal as it stands, for several reasons including the location of the number plate, the lack of chain guard and the short mud- guard . . . Deus will advise you about this, andsteer youto alegal solution. You would certainly be joining an exclusive club if you rode a bobber, and if that’s your wish you could do worse than to establish contact with Deus Ex Machina at 98 Parramatta Rd, Camperdown NSW 2050 by drop- ping in or ringing them on 02 9557 6866. You don’t necessarily need anyone’s help to build a bobber, of course. But these people have already solved the major prob- lems that arise during conver- sion, they have access to the parts required and they even have a supply of 'donor' bikes. Frozzie solves bike parts shortage BACK TO BASICS: Deus Ex Machina’s Bobbersake Kawasaki W650 has just the right bobber looks. THE Australian Moto Morini importer recently ceased trad- ing, which has created a sud- den shortage of spare parts in this country. With no short term distribution network in place for current Moto Morini owners and dealers, this was a potential problem. But Froz- zie’s Bling Factory has man- aged to establish asupply chain of original Moto Morini parts from Europe. Anyone who needs parts for the range that are not available here, can contact Frozzie on 02 6689 5716 or log onto www.frozzie.com. 2037303-8 2003678-41
