It’s the Clio Renault Sport 197, which goes on sale in Australia in April at $39,990. The total is well behind the one million-plus result for Toyota, but Honda believes it is about to pick up quickly after taking more than 10,000 orders for its new Insight hybrid in the first month of sales in Japan. Honda is forecasting sales of 200,000 Insights a year and is selling hybrids in 40 countries. Underperforming PERFORMANCEcars took one of the big early hits in General Motors’ survival plan. Its High Performance Vehicle Operations — which produced breakthrough cars including V-Series Cadillacs — has been scrapped and there are no plans for future HSV or FPV-style models in GM’s American model lineup. There are no details yet on the cars as the names were only made public because they were included in Chrysler’s submission for extra government aid in the US. Each in their own way presents Toyota’s vision of the future, says Toyota marketing chief, David Butt- ner. ‘‘It’s no coincidence that all three cars have hybrid drive technology,’’ he said. The 1/X presents a vision of tomorrow while the Prius hybrid and Camry concept hybrid point to just what’s around the corner. The Prius goes on sale later this year for under $40,000 and theCamry hybrid, to be built at Toyota’s Altona plant, hits showrooms next Febru- ary. The Camry hybrid will be built alongside the 2.4-litre petrol Camry and is expected to cost between $3000 and $4000 more.
