The Mercury Cars Guide : March 7th 2009
Saturday, March 7, 2009 Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au When old is new again 0 O LD bikers get all dewy- eyed when they see this Harley-Davidson XR 1200 roll on by. It looks much like the Harley XR 750 featured in the 1970s documentary On Any Sunday. In the movie, riders thrash the bike sideways at speeds of more than 160km/h on flat dirt tracks. It was a sport that never really took off in Australia. The other place we will have seen the XR 750 was flying through the air with famous stuntman Evel Kneivel aboard, or crashing like in the 1975 Wembley Stadium jump over 13 double- decker buses. Despite the obvious American connection, this modern version of the XR 750 was not made for Americans. It was the first Harley made for an overseas market, being re- leased almost two years ago in Europe and now Australia. I rode one recently and despite the torquey 1200cc engine, it didn’t go very fast. That’s because people kept bailing me up, wanting to look it over and reminisce. Basically the XR 1200 is an XL 1200 Sportster with swept-back wide handlebars, a steeper steer- ing rake, higher rear end and a more sportsbike riding position with semi-rearset footrests for cornering clearance. The bars-to-seat-to-pegs position is unique, but it combines tomake a good set-up for riding through RETRO STYLED: The Harley Davidson XR 1200 in motion. Picture: KEVIN BULL twisty mountain roads, as well as performing tight maneuvres in commuter traffic where the en- gine tends to cook your legs on a hot day. It might look like it could race sideways across a flat track but this is definitely tyred and tuned for tarmac. At highway speeds, though, the riding position is a little uncom- fortable for wind buffeting. The hard and flat rider’s seat plus the limited range 13.3-litre fuel tank mean this is a bike for short blasts along your favourite stretch of road. Pillion comfort is also low with a tiny seat and only a strap to hold on to. The isolation-mounted 1202cc Evolution V-Twin engine is the same as in the Sportster but tuned for15kWmore power, with higher compression and more revs thanks to a lighter Buell flywheel. In traffic it can be quite a handful, especially with its lower gearing. Top-end power is more than a Sportster but still less than an enthusiastic Japanese naked bike. Stopping power is also beefed up with 292mm discs and four-pot Nissin calipers up front with plenty of bite. While the sidestand is a little difficutl to find as it is tucked away, it locks inwhenextended so you can park the bike downhill without it rolling off the stand. One of Harley’s best inventions yet. Instruments are suitably mini- mal and retro looking — except for the digital speedo — but they serve their purpose and are easy to read in all lighting conditions. MARK HINCHLIFFE It’s just the thing to Canter to a bushfire A RELIABLE truck is a vital part of the fire fighter’s armoury. When you’re staring down a raging bush- fire you need to know your truck won’t let you down. Fuso trucks are a familiar sight around the Australian bush. They’ve been used by fire fighting services for years, and the new Canter 4x4 will no doubt become a familiar sight on the fire front in the coming years. The new six-tonneFGCanter is designed to work in some of the toughest conditions on the planet. It’s designed for use by fire fighting services, but it’s also likely to be used by mining companies, power suppliers, and even farmers who need a truck capable of going places few other vehicles will go, and go there carrying a sizeable load. Fuso makes around 1000 Canter 4x4s every year and about one-third of those come to Australia. Most of those are delivered to fire- fighting services around the country. So important is the Australian market to Fuso that a number of the company’s engineerscamehere to consult fire fighterson what they needed in a truck. What they came to understand during their visit was that it had to withstand some of the most severe operating conditions they had seen anywhere in the world. They also realised that to survive their truck had to be tough and rugged but simple. It had to be able to withstand very high temperatures and it had to be waterproof in an environment in which huge volumes of water are sprayed around in all directions. The high temperatures meant the Canter 4x4 had to have as few electronic systems as possible; as far as it was possible in today’s electronic world it had to be mechanical. There was no escaping the electronic engine — the Canter had to comply with the latest exhaust emission limits, so the 4.9-litre four-cylinder engine had to be the latest electronically driven common-rail turbo die- sel Fuso had. with Graham Smith wheels On song it delivers 110kW at 2700 revs and 471Nm at 1600 revs, which is 7 per cent more power and 29 per cent more torque than the engine in the previous model. It delivers all of the grunt the Canter needs to climb steep hills and plunge down deep gullies. The main transmission is a five-speed Fuso gearbox with synchros on all but first gear, while the transfer case is a full manual two- speed unit with manual selection and shift. The manual transfer case makes the Canter 4x4 used in Australia a rather rare beast as most other countries now use a viscous coupling. For local fire fighters manual four- wheel drive just adds to the ultimate reliabil- ity of the Canter in the heat of battle. The foundation of the FG Canter 4x4 is a gooseneck chassis, which steps down behind the cab to lower the truck’s centre of gravity in the interests of stability offroad. There are two cab versions available: a single cab unit and a crew-cab, which meets the needs of the fire services. The single cab truck will accommodate three across the single bench seat, while the dual cab will take seven with four across the rear bench seat. Both are roomy and comfortable with all the features expected of a truck today. The risk of power windows failing in the intense heat of a bushfire was too high so Fusos engineers designed in manual cranks. Two wheelbase options are offered, the shortest being 2860mm and the longest 3460mm, the latter available with the single and dual cabs. It is rated at six-tonne GVM and 9.2-tonne GCM,but can be rateddownto 4.5-tonneGVM to be driven on a car licence if needed.
