The Mercury Cars Guide : April 4th 2009
4— CARSguide Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, April 4, 2009 GM-Holden back ethanol use Aspetrol prices continue to escalate, manydrivers are looking at alternative fuel sources. NeilMcDonaldreportsonthemost likely alterative spread use of ethanol. GM-Holden director of en- C ergy and environment Ri- chard Marshall believes that when petrol prices hit $2-a-litre, more consumers will swing to ethanol. However, GM-Holden is not waiting until that day to push E85 — 85 per cent ethanol, 15 per cent petrol — ‘‘flex-fuel’’ cars. It plans to have locally built flex-fuel Commodore on the road by 2010. Its new four-cylinder Cruze sedan is also tipped to be a flex-fuel car. Some of GM’s Saab models already run E85. GM-Holden, along with its GM parent in the United States, is pushing a revolu- tionary waste-to-ethanol proc- ess in conjunction with US- based company Coskata. Coskata wants to rapidly commercialise ethanol as an alternative to petrol with the ONSUMER accep- tance remains the biggest stumbling block to the wide- potential to replace up to 30 per cent of current petrol stocks. It’s chief marketing officer, Wes Bolsen, is in Australia this week to spruik his com- pany’s process. He is meeting with the Victorian and Queensland governments to push the tech- nology. Bolsen wants governments, private enterprise and the rural community to get on board. ‘‘We need to show govern- ments the resolve behind dis- placing oil and doing what- ever it takes in the national security interest to make that happen,’’ he said. Bolsen says the US ethanol industry is still very strong, despite some questions over financing and some bankrupt- cies. Coskata believes that with government subsidies, its ethanol will cost $US40 a barrel, or between $US60- $US70 a barrel without, sub- stantially cheaper than our dwindling oil supplies. It believes it can produce ethanol for less than 35 cents a litre based on current prices. Marshall said he would like to see a fully commercialised local ethanol plant using the Coskata process running here by 2012. Coskata’s process can use household waste, old tyres FUEL SOURCE: An artists graphic of the Coskata ethanol production cycle. It is looking at LPG, down- and green waste into fuel. Currently 7 million vehicles around the world are fueled by ethanol. More than 3 million areGM vehicles. GM-Holden recently launched its ‘‘EcoLine’’ strat- egy to push fuel saving meas- ures. sizing engines, camshaft phas- ing and active fuel manage- ment to slash fuel consumption in its cars. Bolsen admitted that be- cause of the global economic downturn financing a $US300- million plant using the Coska- ta system remains a hurdle. ‘‘What we’re looking at in Australia is a partnership between government, GM- Holden, flexible technology and the ability to bring in that feedstock industries,’’ he said. He said a forum of inter- ested partiesmaybe needed to get the concept off the ground. WINNINGCARS. SPOTONPRICES.
