Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, April 4, 2009 Mazda’s new ute is ideal for work and play VERSATILE: Features such as air conditioning and a CD player and make Mazda’s updated BT-50 dual-cab comfortable as well as practical. small torque Mazda BT-50 DSX dual-cab turbodiesel Price: from $44,690 Engine: three-litre common-rail direct-injection 16-valve DOHC intercooled turbodiesel four- cylinder Transmission: five-speed man- ual, dual range, four-wheel drive. Power: 115kW @ 3200rpm. Torque: 380Nm @ 1800rpm. WORKHORSE: The new Mazda dual-cab is capable of carrying big loads. Abit of hardworknever hurt anyone apparently, but in the MazdaBT-50’s case it likes it. Stuart Martin reports THE updated Mazda BT-50 SDX dual-cab diesel manual is being asked to haul lumber, stock feed and all sorts of gear and it seems to like it rough. The looks haven’t changed much from the previous model andit retains the three-litre turbo- diesel drivetrain. Hooked up to a five-speed man- ual the turbodiesel likes to think about getting underway for a second before the torque surge comes in. But once in the thick of the turbo’s activity there’s a decent amount of force on offer. Ripping around in day-to-day running, the ’50 easily keeps pace in the traffic but the bulk of Adelaide’s metropolitan road sur- faces picked a fight with the Mazda’s rear suspension. Mid-corner bumps made life more than a little entertaining the first two dozen times but after that the rear-end boot became a little tiresome. Throw half a dozen bails of hay and 100-odd kilograms of horse feed in the back, strapped down using the rope eyelets, and the change is dramatic. The front end’s respectable road manners are almost matched by the once-wayward rump, but the horses’ complaints over a lack of food meant the smooth ride quality was short- lived. Load-lugging wasn’t restricted to the tray, with the BT-50’s three- tonne towing capacity tested with a trailer-load of three-metre sleepers, which were pulled with- out any issues, although the brakes — currently front disc/ rear drum—could do with a little more grunt. As could the horn — I swear a leisurely and complacent magpie turned and laughedwhenI hit the horn to suggest he re-locate. A big macho truck with a horn that would sound inadequate on a shopping trolley, come on Mazda. The features list, conversely, is right up there with a well- equipped commuter car now — air conditioning, dual-front air- bags, ABS brakes and a six- speaker MP3 compatible in-dash 6CD stacker. The back seat is a little upright for most tastes but isOKfor short trips; the cabin has good storage ‘‘cubbies’’ and is cloth-trimmed with plastics perhaps chosen more for robustness than aes- thetics. The days of light-commercials being stripped-out workhorses are long gone; the driver still has to work harder than those in a passenger-car based utiltiy— turning circle in particular—but a the BT-50 ticks the boxes as a versatile work-and-play machine. ?Nissan Navara ST-X 2.5 dual cab, from $47,160.
