The Mercury Cars Guide : April 18th 2009
Saturday, April 18, 2009 Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au on a happy face VERSATILE: A hatchback version of the Mazda3. ENJOY THE RIDE: The 2009 Mazda3 keeps the company at the front of the ‘‘fun-to-drive’’ brigade. improve the strength and tor- sional stiffness of the new model, with consequent re- ductions in noise, vibration and harshness levels. The new 2.5-litre engine has exactly the same external di- mensions as the 2.3 it replaces, but is cast from a stronger material to allow thinner walls between the slightly larger cylinders. Mazda says the new car is slightly larger, mainly due to extra overhang, yet more fuel- efficient, ranging from 7.9l/100km for the two-litre manual to 8.6L/100km for the SP25. On the road the new Maz- da3 ticks most of the boxes that have kept the company at the front of the ‘‘fun-to-drive’’ brigade. The cars have excep- tionally good isolation from engine noise, yet allow a good degree of the exhaust tone into the cabin. Tyre roar on coarse-chip surfaces is noticeable, but not outside accepted levels. The interiors are thought- fully laid out, well-trimmed with plenty of soft-touch sur- faces, and functional. Shoulder room for a couple of larger blokes can get a bit tight but not uncomfortable, and seats are well-bolstered. Dynamicallythe caris enjoy- able to drive, with the new standard six-speedmanualwell sorted if a little tall in search of cruising economy. The chassis is tight and the suspension compliant and comfortable. However, in the Neo and Maxx the mechanical package was let down by the 195/65 tyres, which suffered from noticeable rollover on turn-in, and felt less than comfortable when push came to shove. The issue went away when stepping up to the Maxx Sport with lower-profile 205/55 rub- ber and less compression in the tyre wall. With the tyres working there was less front- end push, the steering imbued greater confidence and the ‘‘zoom zoom’’ feeling was back. Both the two-litre and 2.5-litre engines are impres- sive, quiet when cruising and willing to work hard. Drive them like you stole them and the satisfaction — from both the dynamics and the sound — will bring a smile. Mazda says a diesel is still under consideration. small torque Mazda3 Price: $21,990 (Neo manual), $24,990 (Maxx), $27,690 (Maxx Sport), $30,690 (SP25).
