10— CARSguide Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Time for new timing belt I AM getting conflicting infor- mation about changing the timing belt on my wife’s 2000 model Subaru Liberty RS Sedan. Although it is nine years old, it has only travelled 55,000km and is still in perfect condition. A qualified mechanic services it regularly and he tells me to leave it until nearer 100,000km before changing it, but others say it should be done now. Tom Miller e-mail We asked Subaru for their advice, which was as follows: ‘‘The factory-recommended change interval for the timing belt on a 2000 model year Liberty is at 100,000km or 48 months, whichever should first occur, so at nine years old the belt should have been re- placed twice. Wear is not just dependant on distance travelled. Time also affects ageing of the rub- ber and accentuated wear as a result of short-distance driving where normal operating tem- peratures are not achieved. In the case of the cam belt, it would be fair to say that kilometres and actual engine operation are the main factors to consider, so some tolerance could be made for extending the time interval where low annual kilometres were driv- en. But there is no specified allowance made for this condi- tion by Subaru, and we strong- ly advise in the interests of engine durability that the belt now be changed in this case.’’ I would agree that it’s best to change the belt; by not doing so, you’re gambling against a failure and that’s not wise. limits, tolerances and even kinet- ic energy, but one thing that doesn’t seem to get a mention is I read with interest the de- PERFORMANCE AUTOMOBILES ONE Subaru Forester X automatic has been reduced by $2137. My new Toyota Kluger is similarly scaled to 220km/h and would have an equally slim chance of reaching that speed, even if I were crazy enough to try it. Even my pre- vious V8 Calais was optimisti- cally scaled to 260km/h. Why do manufacturers devote such a large part of the speedo scale to speeds we never get to, instead of having larger, easier-to- read scales at the speeds we do drive at every day? If the speedos were easier to read, we’d be able to judge the speed better and may not get so many speeding tickets? Rod Eddington e-mail Good point. Inmyview it’s the marketing people driving it. They seem to think it is a way of impressing owners and pro- spective owners with the per- formance of their cars. I also think manufacturers should take a long hard look at the graphics they use on in- struments, as some are very hard to read in daylight. MY 1999 100 series Toyota LandCruiser V8 must be the most uneconomical vehicle on the road. When cruising it does 24 litres/100km, when tow- ing that goes out to 32 litres/ 100km. It has been to a few workshops without much improvement, and to sell it is just not viable due to the market value, so I’m thinking of converting it to LPG. Steve O’Neil e-mail The V8 LandCruiser can be converted to LPG with confi- dence, but it needs to be done by someone who knows what they’re doing. The V8 has adjustable tap- pets that require setting every 40,000km as part of the service schedule, whether it’s running on petrol or LPG, and it’s important to keep that mainte- nance up. If you don’t, you can get accelerated valve wear. It’s also important when converting to LPG to make sure the LPG system doesn’t run lean. If it does it will run hotter and that will also increase the chances of premature valve wear, which can be even great- er again if the valve clearances arent maintained. The Australian LPG Ware- house sell a vapour-injection system for the V8 LandCruiser and they spend a lot of time making sure the combustion temperature of engines run- ning their systems are not too high, so valve wear doesn’t become a problem. It’s reckoned you should halve your fuel bill if you convert. until my mate sorted it out. Ford put spacers in the brakes to stop rattles, but it’s the spacers that rattle! Mymate put a little drop of goo THE brake rattle in my 2003 BA Falcon drove me nuts on the spacers and fixed it for life. And using Bendix pads can solve the brake shudder.
