The Mercury Cars Guide : May 2nd 2009
14— CARSguide Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Highway proves a sound idea A USTRALIA will join the digital radio revolution this month. But don’t expect an FM- style takeover by the new system because, despite the popularity of digital radio in the US, there is almost no way of connecting to the new network from your car. For now, the only way to get digital is with the Pure Highway, a stick-on-the-windscreen portable. Still, after months of rumours, false starts and clandestine tests, digital radio is finally coming. Stations on the new DAB Plus airwaves will have new content, better sound and scrolling text for listeners who splash the cash for a portable or bedside radio. The robust new digital signal potentially means the end of inter- ference caused by overhead cabling, and stations drifting off frequency. This is great for pedestrians wired to DAB+ portables and peo- ple listening at home. But motor- ists have been left behind as the major brands wait to see how digital develops in Australia. For now, Pure’s Highway model, distributed by Pioneer, is the only choice as Sony, Alpine, Clarion, Kenwood, Panasonic (and Pioneer) dampentheDAB+parade. Theyare not spending until they see consum- ers calling for the digital edge. Butcar-ownerswouldbe crazy to rip out aperfectly good head unit to retro-fit a digital unit, even if they could. That’s because almost every car sold today hasanintegrated car audio system linked to a mountain of in-dash electronics. That leaves EASY LISTENING: The Pure Highway digital radio offers crystal-clear sounds. us all, for now, with the partner- ship between Pioneer and Pure for the Highway. Pure sound PURE’S Highway digital radio tuner is a ripper. There are no wires to connect to the $299 Highway, which is installed in much the same way as the portable satnav units that suction-cup to the dashboard or windscreen. Tuning to digital radio is as simple as pressing the ‘‘station seek’’ button on the Highway, which then starts streaming digital radio to the car’s head unit over theFMband. It is powered by a couple of inexpensiveAA batteries, though you can plug it into the car’s cigarette lighter socket. Outside the car, the Highway can be used as a portable with headphones. There are no DAB+ stations on air in Melbourne yet to allow a full review of the unit, but over- seas reports on the Highway are glowing, and particularly praise the sound quality. And Paul Baddeley, Pioneer’s product plan- ning manager, says tests in Syd- ney confirm the Highway’s recep- tion is dandy. Pioneer will distribute the range of Pure digital radios, bank- ing on its own reputation for leading-edge car audio, home cin- ema gear and formerly the manu- facturer of the world’s best TV. PETER FAMILARI Exhausting efforts A T the time the latest round of exhaust emis- sion limits were rolled out, therewasplenty of debate on the relative merits of exhaust gas recir- culation (EGR) and selec- tive catalytic reduction (SCR), but in themeantime the rest of the world has come down on the side of the latter, and Australian truckers will have little choice but to follow. When ADR 80/02 was being rolled out at the start of 2008, the trucking world was basically div- ided in two, with Ameri- cans preferring EGR and Europeans SCR. Australian operators were given the choice. Those who preferred trucks with American power trains, such as Ken- worth, Mack and Interna- tional, could have EGR or the now discredited ACERT from Caterpillar, while those who used European trucks, such as Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Iveco and DAF, got SCR. That choice will remain when ADR 80/03, the next round of emission limit tightening, is rolled out in 2011, but come the next round that follows it will all change. That is when Austral- ian fleets will be getting engines now being devel- oped in the US for the American EPA limits coming in there in 2010. Those engines will not only have EGR, they will also have SCR. The American trucking industry has resisted the move to introduce SCR because of fears it would not be able to readily source the additive needed on the road. 1 Draggin Jeans W/proof jean polo fleeced lined. Cummins has already announced it will use SCR to meet the EPA 2010 emission limits, and now Mack has come out and said it will also be using SCR from January. The news that Mack would adopt SCR came from Mack president and chief executive Dennis Slagle during a recent fly- ing visit to Australia. Ironically, Mr Slagle told Big Wheels those US truckers who were once vigorously opposed to SCR are now looking for- ward to it in the hope it delivers much-needed fuel consumption savings. It is now generally ac- cepted that engine manu- facturers can tune their engines for better fuel economy and rely on SCR to treat the emissions in the exhaust system down- stream of the engine. With EGR that treat- ment is done by recircu- lating some of the burnt gases back through the engine, and one of the outcomes of doing that is higher fuel consumption. But with the further tightening of emission limits, the US manufac- turers have found they have had to embrace SCR in addition to EGR. ‘‘In the past 18 months there has been a complete shift in thinking [in the US],’’MrSlagle said. ‘‘Cum- mins coming out and say- ingSCRwasthe bestwayto go was a huge thing.’’ He said Mack would be adopting SCR across its entire model range for the US market next year. ‘‘It’s been a very expen- sive exercise to engineer it, but it’s ready,’’ Mr Slagle said. ‘‘We’re com- fortable with it, and we’re seeing good results.’’ He said while the EPA had imposed tighter emis- sion limits, the industry had responded well to the challenge. ‘‘We’ve gone from the ’90s when we were spew- ing out soot and noxious NOx, to the point we will be scrubbing the air in 2010,’’ Mr Slagle said. ‘‘One of the fellows who has been testing one of our trucks has told us that even after 50,000 miles [80,000km] you can still run your handkerchief over the exhaust and not pick up anything, that’s how clean the new en- gines are.’’ Australia will have to wait until 2014 before equivalent local emission limits are rolled out here. 1 1 1 HONDA CRF80 2007 Honda NSR150 as new, Ph 6261 3623. 2001, $1,500.
