So, where is BMW going with the Gran Turismo? It believes it has found another lucrative hole in worldwide show- rooms, and particularly in Europe, with a vehicle that will draw fresh customers to the brand. It comes as the follow-up to the X6 SUV and arrives following a range of crossover cars—notably the Mercedes-Benz R-Class and CLS — trying, and not always succeeding, to find a fresh oppor- tunity. ‘‘It’s the car you would drive to France. Or Albury,’’ says BMW Australai spokesman Toni An- dreevski. There isnonewsyetonwhatthe Gran Turismo will cost in Austra- lia, or even a confirmation it is coming, but it will be available with turbodiesel, petrol six and V8 engines, a huge range of standard equipment and BMW’s latest Dy- namic Drive. BMW Australia believes it can get the car in the towards the middle of 2010, if it can make a business case, but predicts sales around the same level as the X6. That means less than 50 cars a month, so owners would rarely have to worry about seeing an- other Gran Turismo. So, what is the question BMW has answered with the 5 GT? ‘‘It’s BMW trying to establish a new category or appeal to custom- ers in a new category. Its primary function is to combine a sedan, an SUVand a classic gran turismo. It’s another example ofBMWinnovat- ing. Again.’’ The most unusual thing about the Gran Turismo is the tail, which is hatchback in style but— like the twin-door Skoda Superb— has two tail-end choices. It can be a hatchback or a sedan, depending on the amount of luggage space needed for a job. To boost the rear-end flexibility, the rear seats can also slide for- wards to increase the luggage space. BMW currently lists three en- gines for the car—530d, 535i, 550i — and a huge range of standard and optional equipment. But the cabin takes its lead from the new 7 Series in dash layout, space and final finishing. And BMWsays theGran Turismo does not necessarily point to the look of the next 5 Series sedan, coming in 18 months.Or perhaps point to the end of the Touring wagon. ‘‘You can see traces of the Concept CS. It’s a mixture of 7 Series as well. The styling is not necessarily the new 5 Series,’’ says Andreevski. But one thing is certain: like every new highline car in BMW history, it will have a premium price. ‘‘It’s likely to be priced higher than a 5 Series sedan,’’ admits Andreevski. ‘‘For Australia, it will be a very niche car. It’s not a car that will sell in great volume. It can never be as popular in Australia as itwas in Europe.’’ He points to the contrast in sales of station wagons, which are huge in Europe, against theSUVswhich dominate in Australia and the USA. ‘‘It will only ever appeal to a very select customer base. So we’re looking at whether we intro- duce it, which engines, and all that,’’ he says. ‘‘It’s not a done deal. But, if it comes, it’s most likely for the first quarter of 2010. We’re currently- discussing which way we might go.’’ Show stoppers MORE than 20 major foreign carmakers, including General Motors and BMW will skip the Tokyo Motor Show later this year to save costs, underlining a deep- ening slump in the global auto industry. ‘‘It is unprecedented to see such a large number of carmakers not coming to the motor show. It’s disappointing,’’ said Kazusa Yoshino, a spokeswoman for the Japan Automobile Manufac- turers Association, which spon- sors the biennial auto event. Yoshino said 22 foreign car- makers including Ford, Volkswa- gen and Porsche would pass on the Tokyo Motor Show, leaving only four foreign makers — in- cluding Hyundai, Ferrari and Lotus — at the October event. conditioning, alloy wheels, cruise control and full elec- trics for $28,990 save $7371.
