NeilMcDonald hasalook athowhybrid promoters are spreding theirmessage G REEN cars should be free of import duty to help spread the environmental message. ‘‘That would be a great first step,’’ according to Honda Australia senior director, Lindsay Smalley. ‘‘In some states, like the ACT, they also have favour- able tax rates on things like stamp duty.’’ Smalley is the latest car company chief to join a grow- ing band of supporters who believe more can be done to encourage car buyers into new technology, both at a state and federal level. Car parking incentives for hybrids are also being consid- ered bysomemunicipal coun- cils and shopping centres. Smalley joined leading fashion designer, Akira Isoga- wa, last week to promote World Environment Day and hand over two Honda Civic hybrid sedans to car share company Flexicar in Mel- bourne’s CBD. Flexicar founder and CEO, Monique Conheady, expects the hybrid Hondas to be popular among the com- pany’s 2000 members in Mel- bourne and Sydney. ‘‘We’ve got the cars for a 12-month trial and then defi- POPULAR: The Honda Civic hybrid continues to spark interest. nitely we’ll put more on,’’ she said. ‘‘Our customers are asking for hybrids.’’ The Honda hybrid will cost the same to rent as Flexicar’s Jazz models, from between $9 and $13 an hour or $69 to $89 a day, including petrol and insurance.
