The Mercury Cars Guide : June 13th 2009
Saturday, June 13, 2009 Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au —9 Deadline looming on gas rebate C ARownerswhoare thinking about converting to LPG have less than three weeks to capitalise on the full $2000 Federal Government rebate. After July 1, the rebate for privately owned cars will drop to $1750 before being scaled down to $1000 by 2012. The $2000 rebate for new cars sold with a factory fitted LPG system will remain unchanged. Converting to LPG has to be completed by the June 30 deadline to qualify for the grant. The move, announced in the Budget, has left LPG Australia, which speaks on behalf of installers, puzzled as to why the green initiative is losing government support. The company says cars running on gas produce half the level of pollutants com- pared to petrol engines and 95 percent less than diesel motors. LPG costs about half the price of petrol, but it is not as efficient as petrol and the gas storage tank fill much of the boot area in most vehicles. Last year 125,000 vehicles were converted to run on gas. Caltex move questioned market when it takes over 302 Mobile service station sites. CALTEX looks set to grab more than 40 percent of the national retail fuel Themoveis the subject of a review by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and the Foreign Investment Review Board. If successful, the takeover will be more pressure on independent station owners, many of whom are already struggling to maintain their small foothold in the fuel market. Caltex already owns 748 outlets around the country and will have 1050 sites if it acquires the Mobile outlets. Caltex also has an alliance with Woolworths which has a 38 percent share of the retail fuel market. Proton offer, with a catch PROTON is offering three years free servicing and a five-year, 120,000 war- ranty on selected models. However, there is a catch. The offer is on pre 2009 vehicles, which are sold and delivered by the end of July and it excludes the Jumbuck. The extended warranty is also not transferrable if the vehicle is sold. Proton says the servicing deal is worth about $1000 over the three-year period. The move is designed to clear stocks of cars ahead of the arrival of a new entry level model next year and a major relaunch of the brand. suddenly ill or have a heart attack.
