The Mercury Cars Guide : June 20th 2009
Saturday, June 20, 2009 Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au —11 Mitsubishi decides to think small Australia’sbaby boomwillsoonlead to the birth oftwo newtiny tykes with Mitsubishi badges. PaulGoverreports A CITY runabout and a scaled-down Pajero have been created by Mitsu- bishi and should be in Australia within 12-18 months. Each will have a sub-$20,000 price- tag and are part of an overall objective to make Mitsubishi the leading motoring importer down under. Details of the compact plan are still secret but Mitsubishi is giving early hints. ‘‘Yes, we have a few things com- ing,’’ admits Paul Unerkov, vice- president of brand and marketing for the company. ‘‘We can see that there are some opportunities with some smaller models.’’ The town car will come first and will be much the same as the plug-in iMiEV, without the batteries. There are a range of i-car models in Japan, both small hatchbacks and coupes, and the most likely choice for Aus- tralia is a five-door which could be priced below $15,000. ‘‘We have been looking at that segment for some time. That’s a no- brainer,’’ Unerkov says. But he gives no details on price or on-sale targets, or even the chance for an i-car model change before MOTOR: Mitsubishi Pajero Mini Exceed New hatch on way NISSANis also working on a plan for a price-driven boost to its local following. It intends to turn its Dualis SUV into a front-wheel drive to cut the price and boost potential sales. The car is coming in August, and based on the current $28,990 starting price for a two-litre all- wheel drive model the front- runner Dualis should be in the $25,000 range. ‘‘Why are we doing a front- drive model? Because we think the Dualis has got potential to do better than it has, and to do that it needs to be pitched more at the small-hatch market,’’ says Nissan Australia spokesman, Jeff Fisher. ‘‘The positioning will be differ- ent. It makes sense. It’s a small two-litre hatch with an elevated driving position, a nice place to be.’’ The price and specification is still being setandMrFisher is not giving much away on the price. Australian sales. The four-wheel drivewouldbeapotential rival to the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, but would be very different to the iO which failed in Australia. ‘‘That car was outdated before we got it. This would be brand new,’’ says Unerkov. So it’s likely to be a scaled-down Pajero with genuine rough-road abil- ity, as well as the trendy SUV high- rider cabin. The size and price fighters have the potential to boost Mitsubishi sales by more than 300 vehicles a month, as well as bringing new owners in at the bottom of the range. It’s an important move for the company, which is still working on the right range following the end of local production. It is doing well with the Lancer, Triton and Outlander and, even if sales in 2009 are down slightly on the same time in 2008, the big three are actually in short supply. The four-wheel drives are also in their final months before a mid-life tickle. ‘‘Triton and Outlander are set for updates in the third quarter,’’ says Mitsubishi spokesperson, Lenore Fletcher, without giving details. ‘‘It will be a little cheaper,’’ he says. But Nissan believes it could be a good choice for a lot of 20-something Australians. ‘‘Dualis is currently selling around 150 a month,’’ Mr Fisher said. ‘‘We would like to double that number.’’ OPEN ALL DA 2006 Toyota Rav 4 CV 5 Door Wagon Manual Trans, Storm Blue Paintwork, 77,000km, ABS Brakes, Cruise Control. + MUCH MORE!
