The Mercury Cars Guide : June 27th 2009
8— Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, June 27, 2009 Peugeot hits Aussie speed bump ‘ P EUGEOT’S plans to land a compact SUV in Australia have been stalled for at least two years with the news that an all-wheel drive version of the new 3008 will not be launched in Europe until 2011. It was expected that the arrival of the 3008 would mean Peugeot finally had a competi- tive offering in an area of the market it has so far ignored. Peugeot Australia’s Mark McCartney said the plan was that they would have the 3008 on sale in the first quarter of next year, but only available as a two-wheel drive model. ‘‘We are not calling that car an SUV, but rather a crossover that offers choices to people who may want more than a medium hatch offers but don’t want to go down the SUV road,’’ Mr McCartney said. ‘‘The 3008 really is in a bit of a class of its own — it’s not a soft-roader or an SUV, it’s not a people mover and it is not a hatchback. ‘‘It borrows elements from all of those areas to create a unique type of vehicle.’’ The 3008 sits on the smaller 308 hatch platform but with higher, wider and longer body- work and extra ground clear- ance that gives the car an external impression of a lightly inflated balloon but does pay benefits with extra interior space. Mr McCartney says Peugeot is still looking at offering an AWD in Australia but that would have to wait until the arrival of the diesel hybrid version of the 3008 two years down the track. While pricing and specifica- tion has yet to be set Peugeot is likely to forgo a price leader for the 3008 in favour of a more highly specified model, ac- knowledging its role as a niche player. ‘‘At this stage it isn’t possible to say where the car will sit in the market or exactly what you would consider as a competitor, it issuchadifferent type of car that it answers a lot of questions for a lot of different buyers,’’ Mr McCartney said. In Europe the 3008 goes head- to-head with the Nissan Qash- qai (Dualis in Australia), Re- nault’s Koleos,VWTiguan and Ford Kuga.
