The Mercury Cars Guide : July 4th 2009
4— Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, July 4, 2009 Chinese welcome crash-testing A KEVIN HEPWORTH USTRALIA’S peak crash test safety body has vowed that the first of the Chinese-made cars to reach Australia will have their chance to prove their safety creden- tials in an open forum. AustralasianNewCar Assessment Program chairman Lauchlan McIn- tosh said this week that the pair of Great Wall utes that spearheaded what is predicted to be agrowing tide of Chinese-made vehicles heading into the Australian market will be put through the organisation’s inter- nationally recognised crash-test reg- imen. ‘‘We have already spoken to the Great Wall people and told them we are interested in testing the new models, and now that they are available for purchase that will happen sooner rather than later,’’ McIntosh says. ‘‘We are also planning on expand- ing the commercial test program to include more utes and light commer- cial vehicles.’’ A Great Wall Motors spokesman says its cars have been crash-tested internally in China by the manufac- turer and that a satisfactory outcome was expected. ‘‘We are assured that the com- pany’s own crash testing is to the same standard as ANCAP,’’ he said. However, neither of the Great Wall models have electronic stability con- trol which excludes them from gain- RUGGED: The Chinese-built Great Wall V240 which is invading the Australia ute market. ing the maximum five-star rating. The base model SA220 also goes without airbags or anti-lock brakes while the newer V240 has twin airbags, anti-lock brakes and electro- nic brakeforce distribution. When the Indian-built Mahindra Pik-Up gets its suite of airbags and anti-lock brakes later this month and the Toyota LandCruiser Troopie gets a rumoured ‘‘technical upgrade’’ (with a similar package of ABS and airbags), it will leave theSA220 as the only car available for sale in Austra- lia without a single airbag. And suggestions that the Chinese models will take up the mantle as Australia’s cheapest cars will have to wait for the arrival of the small sedans expected early next year. The Great Wall utes start at $19,900 for the 4x2 SA220 and top out at $26,990 for the 4x4 V240. Australian Importer Ateco Auto- motive has set up a 45-strong nation- al dealer network to support the new brand. The SA220 is powered by a 2.2-litre four-cylinder petrol with 78kW and 190Nm while the V240 has a newer 2.4-litre four-cylinder with 100kW and 200Nm. Both are driven through a five- speed manual gearbox. The new models feature power windows, alloy wheels, leather- trimmed seats and air-conditioning. We are also planning on expanding the commercial test program to include more utes and light commercial vehicles. ‘ Australasian New Car Assessment Program chairman Lauchlan McIntosh ’ HYUNDAI AWAR AIMID-YEAR SALE ARD WINN NNIING C SARCARS If you’re a small business with an ABN, you may be eligible for the Federal Government’s investment allowance.
