The Mercury Cars Guide : July 4th 2009

NEIL McDONALD T HE winds of change are through the Alfa Ro- meo design studios. The arrival of the stylish MiTo and 8C Competizione started the ball rolling. Now Alfa is close to finishing off its 147 replacement, which is expected to borrow heavily from its ‘‘relatives’’. The MiTo’s design has been ahit in Europe, and Alfa is keen to capitalise on this success. Under the heavy black cladding, the new 147, which could be known as either the 149 or Milano, gets the MiTo and 8C Competizione treat- ment. Some MiTo touches, such as the headlights and grille, as well as the round LED tail- lights, will appear on the Milano production car when it is launched early next year. However, despite the heav- ily disguised rear door, it may also carry over the 149’s high-set rear door handles. The five-door prototype was seen testing at the chal- lenging Nurburgring, where car makers go to finesse ride and handling. With an overall length of 4300mm, the hatch has grown longerandwider, but is lower and very close in size to the 09 X-Trail ST > ALL MODE 4x4-i > Electronic stability control (ESP) > 6 airbags > Air conditioning D 490RIVE AWAY $34 AUTOMATIC PETROL , Metallic colour $495 extra. previous Alfa 156.TheMilano is expected to be available as a five-door hatch initially, but athree-doorandperformance models are tipped to follow. Petrol power is expected to come from a range of both 1.4-litre and 1.7-litre turbo- charged engines, delivering about 90kW and 120kW, with a high-performance 198kW V6 engine expected for the range-topping GTA. Alfa’s 1.9-litre turbo diesel is also expected to be available. Like the MiTo, the new 149 will receive a six-speed man- ual gearbox, with an auto- matic available as an option for some engines. Prices are expected to be close to the current car, start- ing at about $35,000andrising to more than $40,000 for the GTA. The hatch will be based on the same platform as the Fiat Bravo, called the Ritmo here. Alfa Romeo is known to be toying with the Milano name for its Volkswagen Golf com- petitor as the company starts to move away from numeri- cal model names. Details of Alfa’s future name changes were outlined in the Chrysler restructuring plan earlier this year. It showed that the 147 replacement could be called the Milano, and the 159 re- placement the Guilia. The newcomer will be aimed right at the hearts of the typical ‘‘Alfisti’’, statisti- cally aged between 27 and 40. New Porsche line shelved ANY plans for a fifth Por- sche model line have been shelved indefinitely as the company works its way through the global financial crisis and its high-pressure bid for the Volkswagon group. ‘‘Another model line is not something we are con- centrating on at the mo- ment,’’ Executive Vice- President for Sales and Mar- keting Klaus Berning says. ‘‘We may start looking at that after the launch of this car (Panamera) but my gut feeling is thatwedonot need one. ‘‘I am not a magician, I do not know when the world situation will go back to the levels of 2008 — it could be 2011 and it could be 2017, I do not know, but when it does I believe we have the poten- tial with the product line we have to grow our sales to 120,000 or 140,000 without having to push for another model.’’ At then end of the 2008 financial year Porsche had set a sales record of 98,652 cars worldwide with the three existing model lines— the 911, Boxster and Cay- enne. First-year production for the four-door GT Pana- mera has been set at 20,000 with Mr Berning predicting that as many as 80 per cent of those cars will be incre- mental sales. ‘‘People are constantly asking whether there will be another Speedster small sportscar but there is simply no need for that,’’ Mr Bern- ing says. When asked whether it was possible that a four- cylinder Porsche could be in the offing to assist the com- pany with its overall fuel averaging, Mr Berning was less dismissive of the idea. ‘‘You never say never, but we have not made any deci- sion to go that way. ‘‘It could be possible to have a four-cylinder again in a 911 . . . but it would be a Porsche four-cylinder. The 911 is the core of the brand and it follows different rules to the rest of the brand models.’’ Berning made it clear that he won’t talk about Porsche’s stalled bid for the VW Group but did say that suggestions that Porsche was facing a total restruc- ture were ‘‘totally BS’’. ‘‘In the car business we are one of the very few car makers the world over still writing black figures today — in the middle of the biggest recession and with- out benefitting from the scrappage bonus paid by the government in Germany,’’ Mr Berning says. With a brand value of $17.5 billion (US) Porsche ranks 35th in the world for all companies and third in the global ranking of car manufacturers behind Toyota and BMW.
