The 2011 Geneva Motor Show also marks the 50th anniversary of the launch of the original E-Type. Jaguar insiders say this would be a good time to launch a new sportscar. Jaguar is not talking timing but Tata chief, Ratan Tata, confirmed the existence of a roadster program to Indian media last week. Tata says Jaguar needs something fresh and new ‘‘which is why we are re- prioritising the roadster right now’’. Although Jaguar’s not say- ing, the roadster could be based on a shortened XK all- aluminium platform but clos- er in price to its key German rivals. Like the XF sedan, the roadster could have V6 and high-performance V8 engines as well as hybrid powertrains. The car’s design is believed to be close to being signed off with an unveiling in time for the 2011 Geneva show. Jaguar Australia general manager, Chris Lidis, was happy to add fuel to the Roadster speculation, saying such a car would be a good fit for the brand. ‘‘It would fit into the Jaguar portfolio really well,’’ he says. Unlike its key German riv- als, Jaguar has ruled out off- roaders as part of its renewed product lineup, signaling that it will reinvigorate and devel- op its passenger cars. The Jaguar momentum continues this month with the unveiling of the eagerly awaited next-generation short and long-wheelbase XJ sedan in London. The car has a glass roof and some sophisticated new tech- nologies to tackle the luxury limousines from BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz. Hybrid technology is also expected, but not at the launch. ‘‘Some people are describ- ing it as a bigger XF but it’s not,’’ Lidis says. ‘‘It is innovative and some of the technology will be out- standing.’’ The XJ engine lineup is expected to include diesels as well as the 375kW/625Nm supercharged 5.0-litre V8 shared with the just-launched XFR. Lidis says the XF sedan has been a saviour for the com- pany, selling more than 500 locally since its launch late last year.
