The Mercury Cars Guide : July 11th 2009
Saturday, July 11, 2009 Whincup to stick around V8 circuit IS it correct that whoever Or does it still depend wins the Sunday race in V8 supercars wins the round? where you finish in all races? Do you see Whincup head- ing overseas next year? Peter Telyszak e-mail The rules for 2009 mean each race stands on its own, with no such thing as an overall round for the weekend. But we’ve checked the points for each non-round this year and the winners under the 2008-and-earlier system would have been: Adelaide,Whincup;Hamil- ton, Whincup; Winton, Lowndes; Plains, Will Davison; Dar- win, Lowdnes on a count- back from Tander. Whincup will definitely continue in V8 Supercars in 2010. Liberty worth a look I WILLbe looking at replac- ing mycurrent three-year- old Mazda6 hatchback auto with a new one next year. Is the new Mazda6 hatch auto a good car, or is there something better for around the same price? I am not interested in the Accord Euro as it is slightly narrower than the Mazda, but should I consider the Toyota Camry/Aurion even though it is larger? Will there be series 2 of the Mazda 6 sometime next year? Harry Giofkou e-mail The Mazda6 is good, but not as great as the original. Youshouldjumpinto the new Subaru Liberty as soon as it lands, in the next firstname.lastname@example.org with GRAHAM SMITH Symmons couple of months, as it is the most likely rival. If your budget allows, also consider the classy new Nissan Maxima. One for the locals ASa recentnewcar buyer interest about what is the best car overall, either Euro- pean, Asian or local. It was pretty easy in 1980 when I bought my first brand-new car, a Mazda 626. Now, in 2009 the engineer- ing, finish, servicing and economy means it doesn’t matter where they are made because its a global industry. You can pick any model you want to suit your style. I letmygirlfriend drivemy new car, showed her the features — where the gears were in the manual shift, mirrors etc. After driving it in varying conditions and speeds she said it’s a beauti- ful car to drive but it’s not a Ford. So it just shows you Aussies are ingrained to our local car brand. My new car is a 2008 VE SV6 Commodore and I am very happy with it. Geoff Clark e-mail I read Carsguide with PICK OF BUNCH: The Nissan Navara is rated best in its class. idea? Damian MacKinnon e-mail ON TRACK: Ford driver Jamie Whincup has been performing very well in the 2009 V8 Supercar Chamionship. The local carmakers do a brilliant job, particularly for the money. Navara is a beaut ute I AMlooking into buying a new car in the next 18 months or so and I was wondering if you had any ideas? I do have a couple of prerequisites, though. Racer, the car/ute has to be able to carry two kayaks, two bikes, assorted rope gear, camping equipment and ca- pable of comfortably being able to tow a trailer. As I also have a new-ish home, it has to have a tray as well. I was thinking of a Triton or a Navara, but maybe you have another The Toyota HiLux is still the benchmark for work- and-play utes, but our fa- vourite — particularly for value—is the Nissan Nav- ara. As I am an Adventure A lesson in manners I HAVE just returned from a five-week holiday in the UK, during which I drove about 4000km, as far north as Scotland, then south along the coast and west to Wales, and couldn’t believe the courtesy of the English driv- ers. I guess, due to the width of the narrow local roads, (many only one-car wide) BETTER BEFORE: Motoring writers are saying the new Mazda6 hatch model is good, but not as great as the original. Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au —13 they have to be, but I also noticed their road manners on the fast motorways. It was a rude shock to get back to Melbourne and share the roads with our impatient drivers. I startedmyvisit driving at a maximum speed of 70mph (112km/h), but was overta- ken by every other vehicle on the road, particularly white vans. After a while I decided it wassafer to drive at 80-90mph (128-144km/h), but I was still being overtaken by 50 per cent of the traffic. I did not see any evidence of any major traffic accidents during my five weeks there.
