Peugeot Automobiles Australia general manager and director Ken Thomas said diesel was important to the company which last month won the Le Mans with a diesel-powered car following on from Audi which achieved diesel victories over the previous two years. Thomas said diesel represented about 60 per cent of their sales and they only offered the 407 in diesel because ‘‘that is where customer demand has been’’. ‘‘People are just asking for it in diesel,’’ he said. ‘‘National demand for diesel passenger cars is up35 per cent and represents about6per cent of the market.’’ He said the 308 diesel repre- sented 37.18 per cent of Peugeot’s total sales, while 308 petrol was 19.63 per cent. The308hatch and Touring are the brand’s biggest sellers by far at 59.7 per cent of sales. Thomas said this year they ex- pected to sell about 6430 vehicles, whichwasdown824onlast yearand a whopping 2377 down on their record total in 2007. Next year he predicted 308 would sell about 3150, 308CC would sell 600, 207 about 750 and 207CC would account for 300. MARK HINCHLIFFE TOPLESS: The 308CC is expected to sell well in Australia. Audi TT lookalike. ‘‘It is a very bold move by Peugeot to do this in these tough financial times,’’ he said. ‘‘It will do very well for us in Australia where coupes do well. ‘‘But it’s hard to identify what numbers would be, but I’d say about 300 a year.’’ Thomas said all models in their range would have stability control standard by January or February. Peugeot only has two models in FRENCH FEEL: The interior boasts leather and colour satellite navigation. It was unveiled as a concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2007 and Thomas said it would go into production in April with few changes. That means the convex, double- bubble rear window, moving spoil- er and aluminium window arches will remain. ‘‘Given all things going to plan, we hope to launch it here in July,’’ Thomas said. It will have the Euro 5 diesel and petrol engines from the new 308, together with six-speed manual and tiptronic transmissions. Thomas described the RCZ as an their current line-up which do not have ESP standard; the 308 entry level and the 207. Revealed in England this week, the new XJ is a radical step away from the car that has been Jaguar’s front-line soldier in the upper- luxury ranks for the last 40 years. With the new look comes a newself-worth reflected in a top-end strategy that would have made Jaguar a laughing stock had they taken such a path with the old model. While reluctant to go into specif- ics, Blackhall confirmed that the supercharged version of the XJ — the Supersport—would be stalking Porsche’s new four-door Panamera and Maserati’s Quattroporte. ‘‘If you think about the super- charged car as having similar per- formance, competitive pricing and styling that some people would think more attractive then there maywell beanopportunity for us at that end of the market,’’ Blackhall says. Jaguar has retained its industry lead in the use of aerospace-inspired aluminium body technology, giving the new XJ an immediate 150kg weight advantage over its rivals as well as enhancing performance, handling and economy, while deliv- ering increased strength refine- ment and safety. The new cars will feature air suspension, adaptive dynamics (continuously variable damping), active differential control and quick-ratio power steering.
