Craig Duff accepts the challenge T HE impact of the Ducati Street- fighter couldmean huge revelations to the performance naked- bike market. This is a bike with the heart of an 1198, but with more accessible power and pricing. The only downside for Ducati is it could steal sales from both the 1198 and Monster naked-bike range. Ducati Australia general manager Warren Lee says the Streetfighter is a logical progression as the Italian company looks to expand its models. ‘‘We couldn’t have just put the engine into a Mon- ster without major work on the chassis,’’ Lee says (the Streetfighter has 20kW more than the Monster S4RS). ‘‘From there, it followed to let the Monster range return to its origins and create a performance naked bike.’’ Rumours suggest the Streetfighter will also be the basis for a new power cruis- er and Ducati has also confirmed it is developing an adventure tourer. The 1099cc Testastretta Evoluzione engine puts out 114kW and 115Nm in the Streetfighter. Match that with a 170kg bike (without battery or fluids) and you have a seriously quick bike. I’d happily put the Street- fighter in my garage ahead of an 1198. It looks as good, doesn’t take an A grade racer’s ability to extract the most from it and is as easy to ride to the shop as on the track. That said, the Street- fighter isn’t perfect. The indicator switch gives no tactile feedback when it’s flicked, so you have to check the dash light to ensure you’ve actually got the blinkers on. It’s a small but frustrat- ing flaw, especially when it’s obvious a bit of thought went into the switchgear and dash layout. For example, thumbing the on/off switchupinto the on position reveals the igni- tion button recessed be- neath the switch. It’s a compact and smart ap- proach, just like the bike. Two things are evident the first time you fire up the Streetfighter — it likes lift- ing the front wheel and the front end feels . . . different. Not wrong different, but heavier and yet more sensi- tive than any Ducati I’ve ridden. It could be the up- right riding style, or the steering geometry, or the fact the bike only has 150km on it and nothing’s loosened up yet. Whichever, it’s a distant memory a couple of hun- dred kays later. That’s when the road loop ends and our track time starts. Eastern Creek isn’t my favourite circuit, but it is a good venue to test the ’Fighter’s mettle. The digi- tal speedo flashes 240km/h and the Ducati is still pull- ing hard on the run into the high-speed turn one. It’s as stable as I am at that speed and much more composed STYLE: The clean lines of the Streetfighter make it a head-turner. than me around the techni- cal back half of the track. Mistakes — generally poorly timed weight shifts —produce a couple of front- end slides, but they’re so progressive even I can catch them and they go away as soon as I stop the erratic behaviour. That’s good for the confidence and the wal- let. What isn’t as good for the confidence is repeatedly clipping the rev limiter. The desmo whine just doesn’t give your ears any indica- tion you’re approaching the redline. So you watch the dash for the red warning lights at either end. Miss them and a bigger red light flashes in the centre of the digital console to let you know the engine’s about to be starved for its own good. Though that’s not necessar- ily good for you or the rest of the bike . . . The moral of the story is when in doubt, shift. There’s enough torque that you can afford to be a gear or two high. Unlike the Ducati Hyper- motard, you can use the mirrors on this bike with- out worrying about deploy- ing ‘‘wide load’’ signs. The swoopy plastic housings don’t move so you adjust the glass mirror inside the frame, but they give a good view of the world behind you at anything less than full acceleration. The ride position is up- right and tilted forward over the bars. There’s sur- prisingly little weight on your wrists, but your shoul- ders may feel the strain after an extended ride. The Streetfighter comes in standard and S guises. TheSmodelis $6000more expensive, but comes with Ohlins suspension in place of the Showa units on the standard bike and has Du- cati’s eight-stage traction control system and a race- spec data analysis software package. Logical rivals include the Triumph Speed Triple, Honda CB1000 R and Yama- ha Fazer. They’re all slightly down on perfor- mance compared with the Ducati, but well down on price. small torque Ducati Streetfighter Price:$24,990(S model$30,990) Engine: 1099cc desmodromicV-twin Power:114kWat9500 revs Torque:115Nmat9500 revs Transmission: Six- speed, chain drive Fuel tank: 16.5 litres Seat height:840mm Dryweight: 169kg (167kg forSmodel) Warranty:Twoyears/ unlimitedkm www.ducati.com.au HYOSUNG250cc Comet, great for learning, 09 model, 2,000 k’s, gread cond, red, 12/9 reg. $5,500.
