Prototypes will hit the road in as soon as two weeks. However the car will not hit local Ford showrooms until March-April 2011. Importantly, the arrival of the Falcon four does not mean the end of the venerable in-line Falcon six. The six will also benefit from Ford Australia’s $230 million ‘‘EcoBoost’’ investment in three new engines to lift fuel economy and lower emissions. Ford Australia president, Marin Burela, says the most difficult economic climate ever facing carmakers is driving the most economical Falcon ever. But he says more can be done with the venerable six cylinder engine. ‘‘We have a lot planned,’’ he says. From July 1, the big six becomes Euro IV compliant, which will mean better economy and lower emissions. In future, Ford could also add in fuel deceleration cut-off technology and electronic throttle control. Ford’s 2.0-litre four cylinder is one of three powertrains being developed as part of the Ford global ‘‘EcoBoost’’ engine strat- More affordable than ever W Australia’s first locally built Falcon four-cylinder is being fast tracked. NeilMcDonaldbrings usupto pace ORK has already started on sliding the hi-tech 2.0-litre four under the Fal- egy announced last week. The others are a dedicated liquid-injection hi-tech LPG inline six for the Falcon sedan and ute and an economical 2.7-litre V6 turbo-diesel to power the Territory. The EcoBoost four will use twin-independent variable cam timing, turbo-charging and direct injection. Based on US figures for the engine, it is expected to deliver around 205kW/380Nm compared to the local Falcon six, which develops 195kW/391Nm. Peak torque will be delivered low from 1500 revs right up to 5000 revs. Ford Australia’s chief vehicle engineer, Rob Connor, says the EcoBoost four has real-world fuel economy benefits regardless of whether it’s driven around town or on the highway. He also says performance will be competitive with other six cylinder engines in the large car segment. The cost payback on the EcoBoost four will be better than a diesel four cylinder or a hybrid four cylinder, he says. Apart from better fuel econo- my, the lighter four is expected to deliver handling and driveability gains. Burela says the EcoBoost four will deliver fuel economy gains of up to 20 per cent and 15 per cent fewer greenhouse gases than an equivalent six cylinder engine. ‘‘Getting the first application of a rear-wheel drive EcoBoost four in Australia in a Falcon sends an incredible message of confidence the Ford Motor Co has in this car and this market,’’ Burela says. Burela says the EcoBoost four will be available in the base Falcon XT but Ford is expected to roll it out in other models. Ford clearly has its sights on governments and fleets with the new engine. ‘‘It will create an opportunity we’ve not had before with governments and fleets,’’ Burela says. Burela also expects the hi- tech liquid injectionLPGengine to be a firm fleet favourite. The LPG engine will have more power and torque and deliver 12 per cent better economy than the current LPG EGas engine, as well as lower running costs and lower CO2s. ‘‘The objective is for the LPG engine to deliver the same experience as the petrol I6,’’ Connor says. The star engine is likely to the European-sourced 2.7-litre turbo-diesel, which already powers some Land Rover, Citroen and Peugeot models. In the two-tonne Land Rover Discovery this engine develops 140kW/440Nm and is mated to a Better boost for your buck THE last locally built four cylinder engine powered the VC Holden Commodore back in 1980. The 1.9-litre four cylinder was actually a 2.85-litre six cylinder engine with two cylinders lopped off. It was initially used in the then Torana but later appeared on the Commodore, where it earned the nickname ‘‘misfire’’ because of its dozy performance. The Starfire engine devel- oped just 58kW at 4600 revs and 140Nm at 2400 revs. However, Ford’s EcoBoost four benefits from 21st century thinking with turbo-charging and direct injection. ZF six-speed transmission. The same combo is will slide easily under the Territory’s bonnet. But with less weight, the local Ford off-roader is set to be something of a performance powerhouse as the turbodiesel’s torque will be delivered lower in the rev range. The TDIV6 will reduce C02s by 25 per cent. Mr Connor says off-roader buyers want the diesel. ‘‘Fifty per cent of the segment is diesel so we need an entrant.’’ Celebrating 100 Years of Audi.
