The Mercury Cars Guide : August 1st 2009
14— Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au around the planet, but what they don’t tell you is how many tyres they went through. bikes have enormous torque and power and weigh 256kg fuelled up. Have a look at the photos of Ewan and Charley on their Long Way Round or Long Way Down tours and you will see how much luggage they took. While road tyres will last a reasonable amount of time, dualpurpose tyres are more suitable for the variety of terrain the duo crossed. I have ridden GSAs extensively, including a recent 4500km trip through outback Queensland, and have never got more than 2500km out of a set of dual-purpose tyres (Continental TKC80 and Metzeler Karoo) — until now. German tyre company Heiden- hau has noted the growing market for 150-width tyres for these bikes and finally released a suitable size in the K60 tyre. It doesn’t have a knobby tread pattern as aggressive as the Karoo or TKC80, but it wears almost three times longer. As long as you adjust the tyre pressures according to terrain, the Heidenhaus will grip just as well on most surfaces. Even bulldust is negotiated easily, so long as you keep your eyes and throttle open. Our trip included high-speed stretches over sharp gravel, but the two bikes (1200 and 1150 GS Adventures) did not get one puncture. Handling on the tarmac is very similar to dual sport tyres, but they are much quieter at highway speeds. Mark Hinchcliffe The 4500km outback trip also resolved concerns about the GSA’s new armoury of electronic gadgetry. My R 1200 GS Adventure was equipped with all the electronics available: tyre pressure monitor, traction control, electronic suspension adjustment, switchable ABS and on-board computer. Despite a substantial amount of bulldust which gets into every nook and cranny, none of the electrics played up. And those electronics came in handy on many occasions. Hyosung offers cool new ride Craig Duff For years the South Korean-built bikes have endured the ‘‘you-get-what-you-pay-for’’ tag. Now with a modern bike and the same prices, Hyosung is hoping that tag will be seen as a compliment. T There was nothing wrong with the carburettor-fed earlier models... other than the fact they had a carbie whentheir rivals had fuel injection. There’s also no doubt fuel injection has seriously improved the Hyosung’s power delivery, with a consistent response any time you open the throttle. The system was sourced from parent com- pany S&T and Hyosung Australia Simon Gloyne says it is a hi-tech multi-channel unit. ‘‘It can download updated (engine) tunes just like the Triumphs,’’ Gloyne says. S&T also produces the dash on the bikes, which features an analogue tachometer and digital LCD display in place of the digital LED screen. Given the target market is for cash-conscious or learner riders, I’d like a display showing HE bold ‘‘EFI’’ decals give some idea of how highly Hyosung Australia rates its fuel-injected model range for 2010. Over the myriad road surfaces, the electronic suspension adjustment got a fair workout, while the tyre pressure monitor was consulted frequently when we encountered sharp gravel. It was nice to know what the ambient temperature was on cold desert mornings and I also consulted the fuel economy and range computer readouts so we didn’t run dry before our next fuel stop. And although several outback servos didn’t have premium, the engine’s knock sensors ensured this wouldn’t be a problem. Fuel economy is normally about 5.4L/100km on daily duties with panniers, my 75kg and no load. However, with a full load and some 110km/h highway runs and a variety of terrain, the economy varied between 6.2 and 6.8L/100km. small torque Hyosung GT650/GV650 Price:From$7990to$9990 Engine: Liquid-cooled 647cc V-twin Power:59kWat9250revs(40kWinLAMS configuration) Torque:67Nmat7250revs Transmission: Five-speed, chain drive (GT) belt drive (GV) Fuel tank: 17 litres (GT) 16 litres(GV650) Seat height:790mm(GT)705mm(GV) Dryweight:From196kg(GT650)to220kg (GV650) Warranty:Twoyears/unlimitedkm www.hyosung.com.au VALUE FOR MONEY: Hyosung’s GT650 S. what gear I’m in, but that’s a minor gripe. The chassis and suspension set-up is spot on. A fact repeatedly pounded home on our test ride over the repatched potholes that make up the road from the New South Wales towns of Stroud to Dungog. There’s 59kW and 67Nm on offer in the regular bikes and on most roads you don’t need much more. Enjoy yes, but not need. The LAMS-approved versions of the bikes are scaled down to 40kW, but that’s a massive 15kW more than learners had with the carbies. It’s a safe bet that won’t hurt sales. There are three models in the GT650 range, starting with the naked bike, then the semifaired S and the fully-faired R. The GV650 cruiser gives a more laid-back option in terms of riding style and on the road will only lose ground if you’re running through seriously tight turns. And then only because you’ll back off when you hear your footpeg grinding into bitumen! The bikes have had a cosmetic tidy-up for 2010 with a cleaner rear housing the tail light and indicators, a set of grab bars with barbs to tie luggage down on—and those EFI decals to let the world know you’re riding a new Hyosung. And you can comfortably shout out that fact because there’s not much else that can match the brand in value-for-money stakes. They now do even better at holding their own on the road.
