The Mercury Cars Guide : August 8th 2009
Saturday, August 8, 2009 Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Honda’s new VT400 proves an easy rider Novice riders have sufferedcramped riding conditionson small-framed cruisers for too long.Mark Hinchliffe finds out howHonda changedthat H ONDA has released the VT400, which is a Learner Approved Motorcycle (LAMS), but the same size as the popular VT750. In fact, people will think it’s a VT750 because there is no discernible difference between the two. Only the very knowledgeable will be able to pick them apart because of the VT400’s smaller muffler aperture. That means you not only get extra street cred, but you also get a relaxed riding position on a bike that won’t get buffeted around by trucks on the highway. It looks lusciously low and wide with chrome pullback handlebars that mean a short and comfortable reach to the bars. Together with the low seat, it makes a perfect bike for shorter people and many women. Taller riders are also well accommodated, but the forward foot controls are not as far forward as most cruisers. Pillions are also well roosted with a generous seat pad and seat-tofootpeg distance, but it could do with more than just a seat sash for grip. The rider’s seat is plump and soft which feels fine at first, but after a while your behind gets numb as you sink down to the supports underneath the seat. Build quality is superb, as ex- pected from Honda, with plenty of clean-looking chrome, neat and simple styling, a traditional teardrop tank and bullet-type chromed headlight casing. Controls and switchgear are conventional and functional. It isnowonder theVT750has sold well. This cruiser handles better than most with a light steering input required for tight turns, quick turn-in and steady mid-corner handling. It wallows only slightly over big bumpswhere the short rear suspension comes unstuck and there is marginal front-end dive under brakes. Speaking of which, the front hydraulic brakes have plenty of progressive feel and more bite than most cruisers, while the rear brake is dull and wooden, but fine for steadying the ship. Cornering is aided by good clear- ance with the hero blobs getting a minimal workout until you start to push it. Postie bike a neat and nifty parcel THEtop-selling bike in Australia is now available for the public to buy new and use on the road. Honda’s CT110 is better known as the ‘‘postie bike’’ because it is usedby Australia Post. Second-hand models have been highly soughtafter as commuter bikes and, because of their nofuss design and reliability, some intrepid adventurers have even ridden them around Australia. They were previously only available new to Australia Post with a number of modifications and as an unregistrable agricultural bike. Now Honda has bowed to demand and released it to the public for sale as a road-registrable bike. Even though it was not available for public sale, it was the top-selling bike for years, selling more than 35,000 in the past 15 years. However, Australia Post has cut back on orders and sales have dropped 18.3 per cent (from 1192 to 974) in the first six months of this year, to be second place behind the Kawasaki EX250J. The main differences between the roadregistrable version and the Australia Post bike are that the CT110 will have selectable low-ratio option and a six-volt electrical system. Australia Post modifi- cations also include different tyres and tubes, 12-volt electrical system, heavy-duty spokes, larger rear-brake drum and a stronger swingarm. The grunty four-stroke 105cc, single-cylinder machines were chosen to deliver our mail because they are are virtually bullet-proof and are low maintenance. They are also easy to ride, lightweight, man- ouevrable and stable. The CT110 features a heel-toe shifter, automatic centrifugal clutch, wet sump oil system and a closed chain guard. The four-speed transmission has a low and high range suitable for commuting and highway riding. The fuel-injected, liquid-cooled, 398cc V-twin engine is soft and smooth, but torquey enough to pull in most gears so you don’t have to tap-dance on the gear shift to get results. It’s so quiet you may think it’s conked out at the lights! Under hard acceleration there is a low groan from the pipes and you feel a little bit of character enter the engine’s pulse. Gears are typically super slick for a Honda bike with a good spread of five usable ratios suitable for the city and country while neutral is very easy to find with no false neutrals. The VT400 comes with Honda’s Ignition Security System (HISS), a strengthened handle lock mechanism and a heavy-duty key cylinder.
