T HE iconic American brand has released the Harley Rocker, which is a chopped up, rearranged and raked-out Softail. While Harley-Davidson has cre- ated custom models with more power and special paint in the past, the company only began ‘‘chopping’’ its own bikes a few years ago. High demand for more custo- mised bikes has been stirred, in part, by the pay-TV hit show American Chopper, which follows the real-life drama of workers in Orange Country Choppers as they weld together special orders for their clients. One of Harley’s new factory chopped models is the Rocker, which is a raked-out Softail. Put some stars and stripes on the Rocker, add a set of ape-hanger bars and it could almost be Captain America, the legendary bike actor Peter Fonda rode in the cult film Easy Rider. Well, not exactly the same. In the movie, Fonda throws his watch away when he picks up his custom chopper, a nod to the freedom of the open road. The Rocker, however, has a digi- tal clock in the instrument cowl, and even though the bike may look old-school, it is powered by a modern fuel-injected engine. HARLEY is under increasing pressure from other manufacturers to muscle into the cruiser sector, one of the few remaining segments of the market performing well. Eleven-year-old Ameri- can bike company Victory entered the Australian market in January with a fivemodel range. Victory sales and market- ing manager Peter Harvey says they are ‘‘going great guns’’ and beating their ‘‘conservative’’ sales targets by 20-30 per cent since going on sale in January. I recently rode the Ham- mer S, which is a strippeddown muscle cruiser and one of their top sellers. It’s an air-cooled competi- tor to Harley’s water-cooled V-Rod and hence the comparisons are unavoidable. They both look menacing with their minimalist styling, low-slung silhouette and fat rear tyres (250mm compared with V-Rod’s 240mm). The Victory is well fin- ished with luscious deep paint, yet some of the materials are plastic where the Harley would have metal. Also the exposed hand control wiring looms look a little cheap. Overall, the impression is more Japanese than American. It also doesn’t have an immobiliser like the Harley but it does self-cancelling indicators which are the traditional single-toggle variety rather than Harley’s separate indicators beside each grip. Both systems work well and are among the best available. However, it is in the engine where these two bikes will most be compared. Even in their looks there is quite a difference. The Victory engine looks clean and well designed with almost no plumbing in sight. The black pots have beautiful silver cooling flanges on the side. It’s almost a work of art. Although both are big- bore twins, the Victory engine is less powerful but more torquey. It’s a 1731cc air-cooled unit compared with the Harley’s 1200cc watercooled engine. So it pulls harder off the line, while the V-Rod will rev out further and go harder at the top end. Victory’s twin is perhaps hampered by the restricted pipes which are very quiet, although for the rider there is a rewarding induction noise that sounds like a bear with a very heavy chest cold. There is a pleasant vibe from the engine, but it’s not enough to make the excellent mirrors vibrate. They remain crystal clear at all revs. Both bikes handle better than most cruisers, but the Victory has better cornering clearance and sharper turn-in, thanks to the upside down forks. However, it’s not exactly nimble with that fat rear tyre. If you think Harleys have a clunky transmission, this one feels like the slasher on the back of the tractor has just been engaged. It not only clunks hard on each gear change, but also bites and lurches, requiring careful clutch work. Neutral is also very difficult to find, but I encountered no false neutrals. The rider’s seat is the perfect shape for my backside —I could easily spend much longer in the saddle than the 17-litre tank allows. GLAMOROUS: The Rocker C is a classy piece of workmanship. rear tyre bouncing independently below. The pillion seat can be deployed in less than 30 seconds and folds away under the rider’s saddle to appear as a genuine single seater. The only problem is that this trick makes the rider’s seat feel harder due to the added bulk underneath. Mark Hinchcliffe A single-seat version of the Rock- er has been dropped from the lineup. I recently rode the Rocker C, which features a black engine, a lot more chrome and a fold-away ‘‘Trick’’ pillion seat. However, criticising the handling of a chopper that is obviously intended for show rather than go is ridiculous. Its parent, the Softail, is the worst handling bike in the Harley stable but is the best selling, which just goes to show what buyers really want.
