The Mercury Cars Guide : September 5th 2009
14--- Classifieds 62 300 400 carsguide.com.au Saturday, September 5, 2009 Bumping over the top by good old postie bike Some people travel far and wide in search of their next big adventure. Frank Wheeler has just ridden across the Tropic of Capricorn. Mark Hinchliffe reports FRANK Wheeler is no stranger to adventure. The 120kg former Texan debt collec- tor has numerous records for long- distance travel by solar-powered boat, scooter, motorcycle and sidecar; he rode in the motorcycle chase scene in The Great Escape with Steve McQueen; he's walked across the Simpson Desert pushing a powered wheelbarrow; and he has just returned from a trip across Australia's Tropic of Capricorn on a 100cc Honda postie bike. ''I've done lots of other wonderful things,'' he drawls in his southern accident. ''But that was really stupid, wasn't it?'' Wheeler is the first person to ride a 100cc motorcycle along the Tropic of Capricorn. He enjoyed the trip so much that when he got to Broome in Western Australia, instead of freighting his bike home, he turned around and rode it back. ''You're not crazy if you know you're crazy,'' he said. Wheeler is now researching his next big adventure: taking two girls who have never ridden motorcycles before from Cairns to Cape York on 1000km of dirt roads. ''I've got about 60 days before it gets too hot and the wet season starts,'' he said. His adventures may seem foolhardy, but Wheeler protests that he rigorously plans all his expeditions. ''Every day is an adventure, but I don't take stupid risks. I take calculated risks,'' he said. Two things he hates: adventurers who raise money for charity and foolhardy adventurers who need to be rescued. ''I do this for personal enjoyment. I don't do it to raise money for charity and to offset the cost of my trip. ''I hate that. If you want to support a charity, then just give. ''There are also too many people going out to do those things (risky adventures) and expect that someone will bail them out if they get into trouble. ''At the end of the day the taxpayer pays the $30,000 for an emergency helicopter and what about the other people who put their lives at risk just to rescue them? ''People should look after themselves. I've had a few flat tyres and stuff but nothing I couldn't cope with.'' Wheeler owns a property at Inverell in northern NSW and lists his occupation on his business card as ''debt collection practi- tioner''. On the flip side is a 10 per cent discount for funerals and medical emergen- cies. The 193cm Texan wears gloves with steel knuckles and has size 15 boots. He claims to be the great great grandson of 1865 US vice-president William A. Wheel- er. The claims come thick and fast --- from rescuing Steve McQueen from a snowbound track in the Sierra Nevada mountains to taking a speed boat from Sydney Harbour to Port Moresby in 18 days. But Jason Leigh, PR manager for Honda Australia Motorcycle and Power Equipment who sponsor Wheeler, swears this is all true''. Adventure bike on comeback trail TOUGH CONDITIONS: The Yamaha XT660 Tenere. YAMAHA'S Tenere adventure bike is making a comeback to Australia. Australia has been without a Tenere since 2000, but the new model will be available from the middle of September, some 18 months after its worldwide release. Taking its name from the tough African desert region which formed part of the gruelling Paris- Dakar rally, the bike is eminently suited to Australia's tough condi- tions. Like the new Triumph Tiger, the XTZ660 Tenere is a bit more road- focused with twin 298mm front discs and dual-sport road tyres. However, the front wheel re- mains 21-inch, rather than going to a smaller wheel as Triumph did. The 208.5kg bike has a long-range 23-litre fuel tank under the seat like BMW's F-series bikes for better mass centralisation and lower cen- tre of gravity to provide stability. It has a tall fairing, large dual seat, luggage rack and a big range of accessories including luggage, bash plates, hand guards, centre stand and Akropovic muffler. While it was originally available in white and red and an interesting khaki, it now comes in more sombre blue and grey, or black and grey. Central to the Tenere's longevity and reliability has been its big single-cylinder, liquid-cooled en- gine, based on the rally-inspired XT500 of the 1970s. However, it is now fuel-injected for better economy and emissions control. The bike features a strong yet light semi-double cradle frame that is compact and slim, long travel suspension and plenty of clearance. Guards on the engine, bodywork and windscreen protect the ma- chine from damage and can be quickly and cheaply replaced. It is believed Yamaha is also working on a 1200cc twin version of the Tenere to combat the BMW R 1200 GS.
