The Mercury Cars Guide : September 12th 2009
18--- Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, September 12, 2009 Sunroof safety queried STATE-OF-THE-ART: The Peugeot 308 wagon comes with an all-glass roof, which Peugeot says is better than a steel roof for its view and safety quality. email@example.com with GRAHAM SMITH QI AM looking for a new car and I like the Peugeot 308 Wagon, but I am concerned about the all-glass roof that is standard. We get heavy hail and cars are dented and their windows get smashed, caravans have holes punched right through their roofs, tile roofs get smashed, animals get injured and killed, so how safe will this glass roof be if I was caught in a hailstorm, or had a rollover? Ken email AWe contacted Peugeot on your behalf and this is the answer we received: ''With an overall rigidity greater than that of steel panel, the panoramic glass roof is assembled from three layers of dark-tinted glass with a thickness of 2.10mm plus 0.76mm plus 2.10mm respective- ly. The combination of the differ- ent layers optimises their perfor- mance in terms of filtration, giving a particularly pleasant view while at the same time limiting light and energy trans- mission into the passenger com- partment to 17 per cent. Basically the glass roof is prob- ably going to be better than a steel roof in both the hailstorm and the rollover. QI RECALL reading that Hyun- dai would release a new Tuc- son in 2010, but Hyundai dealers deny any knowledge of it. Can you tell me anything about it? Fred Fortescue email AWhen we contacted Hyundai they confirmed plans to bring the new model Tucson to Australia in the first half of 2010. QWould a 1999/2000 Ford be a good tow vehicle for a 15-foot caravan weighing 1260kg all up? Would a wagon be better with its rear suspension, and how do you think the auto transmission would cope? Maurice Newton email AThe AU series will tow up to 1600 kg so it should handle your caravan ok. The auto will be ok but I would have it checked to make sure all is well with it, and I would upgrade the transmission cooling to look after the tranny. Both the sedan and wagon will do your towing; the wagon's rear suspension would be a little better. QTHE braking system on my son's 2007 Falcon XR6 sedan doesn't seem to react correctly when slowing suddenly from a number of different speeds.Some- times it does seem to work, but at other times it seems to lock up or disengage. I went with him to see for myself and he stood on the brakes at 80 km/h, and they locked up and the car skidded sideways. The ABS worked when checked by the dealer and there were no faults shown when checked by the computer, but when he got the car back the ABS seemed to stop working again. He then went back to the dealer and the mechanic told him that he shouldn't need to jump on the brakes, so it shouldn't matter and also ABS components are very expensive to replace. How should the ABS react when braking heavily at highway speed? Kevin Walker email AGenerally you need to hit the brakes hard to make the ABS come into play, and you need to hold the brake pedal down hard when it does come in. It may be that he's not braking hard enough to get the ABS working, and if he lets up on the pedal it will stop working and it will feel like the brakes are not stopping the car. Don't listen to the advice you got from the dealer on your last visit, it is important that the ABS is work- ing correctly. QABOUT 2002 I received a letter from Chrysler advising that in some instances a build-up of leaves on the manifold or engine area may result in a fire and that I should book my 2000 Cherokee six into the nearest dealer for some type of free modification to prevent leaf litter entering the engine bay. I ignored the first and second letters, but the third was registered mail requiring my signature. This told me it was serious and that I should get the modification done, so I am surprised that Chrysler told you that there was no history of fires because of all the trouble they went to round up lazy people like me. Greg K email AI recall the notice that did go out, I guess Chrysler's view is that the modification fixed the problem back in 2002, and that there is now no problem. Anyone with a Cherokee should make sure their car has had the modifi- cation. QABOUT a year ago a mouse chewed a hole above the rear passenger tyre in my 2003 Toyota Prado, it went right through the car and left deposits everywhere! Now the brake lights occasionally come on by themselves and have flat- tened the battery a couple of times. Can you help? Miss Mel email AThe mouse could have chewed through the wiring and caused a short. Have the wiring in the rear of the car checked. QI HAVE a budget of around $5000 to buy my first car, and I've located a 2000 Mazda 323 Astina 1.6-litre manual hatch, which fits within my budget. The concern I have is that it has 252,913 km on the clock. What are the issues associated with buying a car with high kays? Andrew Nolen email AYou're right to be concerned because the higher the mile- age a car has done the greater the chances are of having major problems. Your car has done almost twice the average kays for acarofitsage, soyouneedtobe wary about it. The Mazda 323 is generally a robust and reliable car and I wouldn't be concerned if it had the average 150,000 km or so. Make sure it has been ser- viced as per the book, with regular oil and filter changes, and it should have had two cam belt changes by now. When you start the engine listen for any rattling, and watch for smoke from the exhaust when you drive it; make sure the gears engage smoothly without any baulking, and that there are no noises from the gearbox when driving down the road. If you not sure have a trusted mechanic check it, or the RACV if you don't have anyone you feel you can trust.
