Whincup seeks redemption with JAMES BRESNEHAN MOTIVATED: Jamie Whincup's disappointment was obvious after losing to Garth Tander at Phillip Island last year. DESPITE Team Voda- fone's domination of en- durance races over the past four years, reigning V8 supercar champion Jamie Whincup is hoping for a form turnaround at the L&H 500 at Phillip Island this weekend. The Phillip Island event is the first instalment of the V8s two big endurance races, along with Bath- urst next month. It has not been a happy hunting ground for Whincup. ''Its been tough times at Phillip Island for me the last few years,'' Whincup said. ''I narrowly missed out the championship in 2007 by two points to Garth Tander and in 2008 I ran off the track with about five laps to go and got beaten by Garth Tander again. ''That doesn't go away --- I still remember that and you can see where my motivation is now.'' The Triple Eight Race Engineer- ing squad has finished on the podium in the last eight consecu- tive endurance races, dating back to a run that began with Craig Lowndes and Yvan Muller win- ning the Sandown 500 in 2005. Since then, Team Vodafone has taken four wins (Bathurst in 2006, 2007, 2008 and Sandown in 2007), one second (2008 Phillip Island) and two third-place finishes (2005 Bathurst and 2006 Sandown) in the endurance races. Whincup has amassed 300 points and leads the chase for Ford in this years championship, . But Holden drivers Will Davi- son (267) and Lee Holdsworth (249) are well within striking distance, holding out the Falcon of Steven Johnson (222) and Commodore of Jason Richards (207). Tander is confident about his chances this year. ''Having won last year we have fond memories of the race,'' Tan- der said. ''It was our best win of the year. ''After Bathurst we'll assess where we stand in the champion- ship. The team's aim is to get Will closer to Jamie, or even past him, as soon as we can. Winning the annual 500 km race before Bathurst hasn't necessarily been a good guide to which driver will win the V8 Supercar Cham- pionship. The last winner of the 500 to go on and claim the championship was now-NASCAR star Marcos Ambrose, who teamed with Greg Ritter to win at Sandown in 2004 before going on to win his second consecutive championship. The supercars will contest two 14-lap sprint races today, and the L&H 500 will be raced over 113 laps tomorrow starting at 1.35pm. 275 Main Road, Glenorchy Phone: 6213 3315 Brian Anning 0418 531 853 Chris Wakefield 0400 635 446 Allan Gebel 0428 729 659 Good cars at cheap prices! 94 Holden Barina -- 5-door hatch ...................................$3,990 99 Toyota Corolla CSi Hatch -- automatic .............$8,250 00 Holden Barina 5 Door -- 52,000km ...................$8,990 05 Hyundai Getz GL -- low kilometres .........................$8,990 01 Laser LXi Sedan -- 1.6 manual .................................$8,990 00 Mazda 323 Protegé -- alloy wheels.......................$8,990 01 Toyota Hilux -- 2.7 litre ..................................................$9,990 03 Mitsubishi Lancer ES -- automatic.......................$10,750 01 Ford Falcon 1 Tonner -- alloy wheels ................. $11,990 04 Lancer ES -- automatic, 79,000km ................................ $11,990 06 Mitsubishi 380 -- new car warranty.......................$13,990 SPECIAL OF THE WEEK 04 Nissan Pulsar ST Hatch, 64,000km $10,990 3YRS 24 HR ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE ACTIVE SAFETY FEATURES BRAND NEW SAVVY MANUAL SRS Dual Front Airbags ABS with EBD Power Steering Air Conditioning Cup Holders Colour Coded Bumpers Central Locking Remote Keyless Entry Alarm / Immobiliser 4 Speaker CD Audio Remote Fuel Filler Release 15" Alloy Wheels Reverse Sensors Floor Mats Front Power Windows Height Adjustable Drivers Seat Vanity Mirror on Both Sunvisors Front Seat Belt Pre-tensioners Rear Wiper 3 Years 24 hr roadside assistance Fuel Consumption -- 5.7 L/100km† SRS Dual Front Airbags ABS with EBD Power Steering Air Conditioning Cup Holders -- Front & Rear Colour Coded Bumpers Central Locking Remote Keyless Entry Alarm / Immobiliser 4 Speaker CD/MP3 Audio Remote Fuel Filler Release 15" Alloy Wheels Reverse Sensors Tilt Adjustable Steering Column Front and Rear Power Windows Height Adjustable Drivers Seat Front Seat Belt Pre-tensioners Front and Rear Disc Brakes Steering Wheel Audio Control 3 Years 24 hr roadside assistance Fuel Consumption -- 6.6 L/100km† BRAND NEW PERSONA MANUAL 3719-2-0909 * All offers available at participating dealers and while stocks last on new Proton Savvy and Persona vehicles ordered and delivered before 30 September 2009. † Fuel Consumption as per ADR 81/02.
