The Mercury Cars Guide : September 19th 2009
Saturday, September 19, 2009 Classifieds 62 300 400 carsguide.com.au ---3 Share glory with Dunlop at Bathurst TRACTION: Dunlop is set to supply its 70,000th control tyre to the V8 Supercar Championship Series since it become the event's sole supplier in 2002. AMID the fanfare, loud noise and fast speeds at Mt Panorama this October there is a fair chance that a milestone or two will be reached by competing teams and drivers. But away from the intrigue of lap times and championship points a stalwart of Australian motorsport will achieve its own milestone during this year's Bath- urst 1000. Dunlop is set to supply its 70,000th control tyre to the V8 Supercar Championship Series since 2002 when they were con- tracted as sole supplier. At the 2009 Bathurst 1000, the 70,000th Dunlop control tyre will be one of 28 new tyres issued to each team for use over the course of the weekend and will be a big moment for the tyre maker. Dunlop operations manager Ke- vin Fitzsimons says the company is proud of its achievement. Fitzsimons says the difference in tracks across Australia was an excellent reflection on how well the control tyre consistently per- formed. He cited Philip Island and Bath- urst as stand-out examples of the tyre's flexibility. ''The Philip Island circuit places a huge amount of lateral loading on the tyres, with many fast and flowing corners hard on the front of the car, whereas at Bathurst the tyres cop a heap of vertical load- ing,'' he said. ''Up and down pounding has a totally different impact on the tyre.'' You could be there to see that tyre in action. Dunlop and Cars- guide are offering one lucky reader a trip to the Bathurst 1000, worth up to $5000. The prize includes flights and accommodation; cor- porate box tickets; FPR pit tour and a chance to meet the FPR drivers; dinner with two-time Bathurst 1000 winner and V8 Supercar legend John Bowe; and a Dunlop/Bathurst 1000 memorabi- lia wall piece --- that includes a mounted tyre sidewall --- signed by the event winner and Dunlop cap. To enter, go to the Win a Trio to Bathurst story at carsguide.co- m.au and in the comments box at the bottom tell us in less than 25 words why you're the biggest Bathurst fan. You must be over 18 and able to travel between October 8 and 11. Entries close at 5pm AEST on Thursday, October 1. See full Terms and Conditions. Spyder weaves topless web Everyone knew it was only a matter of time before Audi ripped the roof off its rip-snorter R8. Karla Pincott reports from Germany LIMESLIGHT: The new Audi R8 Spyder was unveiled on the first press day of the Frankfurt Auto Show in Frankfurt and is sure to have R8 fans lining up around the block to get one. AUDI has stolen much of the limelight at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. Their new Spyder is still not as sexy as the Ferrari F458, which went public this week for the first time in Frankfurt, but it is sure to put extra length into the waiting line for the R8. There were early rumours the convertible would have a remov- able targa panel but the Spyder follows the rest of the Audi stable with a folding soft roof. Still, there are some significant body changes including the absence of the ''sideblades'' Audi used to accelerate recognition of the R8. Largely hand-built, the re- designed flanks have been sculpted from carbonfibre composite, which is also used for the cover over the roof storage compartment and the twin arched cowls which bulge up behind the seats. The R8 Spyder will go on sale in Europe with a $250,000 pricetag, around $24,000 over the V8 coupe, but extra government charges in Australia will considerably in- crease the bottom line down under. As expected, the Spyder carries Audi's R8 hero engine --- a direct- injected 5.2-litre V10 developing 386kW of power at 8000 revs --- with a limiter set an extra 700 revs later --- coupled with 530Nm of torque at 6500 revs. The Frankfurt Show Spyder has a six-speed manual transmission --- but there will also be the option of the six-speed R-tronic offered with the R8 coupe --- permanently driv- ing all four wheels with Audi's 57:43 rear-biased quattro system. With the self-shift, the fuel con- sumption is posted as 14.9L/100km/ h, while the automatic drops that by a litre. With Audi's aluminium space frame and a host of attention paid to paring poundage wherever possi- ble, the Spyder tips the scales at 1720kg, about 100kg more than the coupe but still giving it a healthy power-to-weight ratio. It will hit the 100km/h mark in 4.1 seconds, just 0.2s behind the R8 coupe, and the Spyder's top speed is also 3km/h behind at 313km/h. The 10-spoke 19-in wheels wear 235/35 front rubber and 295/30 rear, but 305/30 is on the option list, as are carbon-fibre ceramic brakes to replace the standard eight/four piston discs. A ''launch control'' clutch control function will optimise getting the wheels rolling off the line. The standard suspension system will be Audi's ''magnetic ride'' --- which allows you to adjust the alignment of ferrous molecules sus- pended in fluid to alter the damping --- but a more conventional sports system is an option. The acoustic-layered electric soft top takes 19 seconds to operate and can be opened or closed at up to 50km/h, while cabin comfort will be helped by a wind deflector and heated rear window. And, of course, there is long and stacked equipment list of fit-out features --- three-spoke flat- bottomed steering wheel, low-slung power seats, Bang & Olufsen audio system, lap timer and leather every- where possible --- while still leaving room for special options, including a world-first seatbelt microphone for the hands-free unit. The R8 Spyder is a stunning car, and a powerful one. But is there a danger of the convertible being seen more as a fashion item and taken less serious- ly --- a matter of concern for a brand keen to establish its supercar cre- dentials? Audi Australia boss Joerg Hofmann says it will not be a problem. ''The R8 Spyder will add to the R8's image in a very positive way,'' he says. ''Not only is the car extremely sporty thanks to V10 engine, but also adds a very emotional dimen- sion as a convertible. ''It combines a very sporty de- sign, with exceptional performance and a more intense top-down driv- ing experience.'' In order words, it makes the R8 experience even more emotional.
