The Mercury Cars Guide : September 19th 2009
20--- Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, September 19, 2009 Travelling leather lounge WINNEBAGO has ex- panded its Birdsville mod- els to create the Elite range of six motorhomes with lashings of leather. Soft leather upholstery features in the sofa, there are leather inserts in the front bucket seats and it has a leather bedhead. Standard equipment levels also have been boosted with an electric entry step, a colour-screen reversing camera, an in- dash UHF radio, two-tone timber trim and tailored cabin carpet. This is on top of features such as roof aircondition- ing, LCD TV with inbuilt DVD player, wind-out awning, automatic changeover three-way fridge, flushing toilet and kitchen. Birdsville Elite also pro- vides a choice of a rear or mid-cabin island bed, or single beds while some models have an extra bed over the cabin. The Elite range starts at $114,990 and goes up to $124,490 plus on road costs compared with the stan- dard Birdsville which ranges in price from $108,990 to $121,017. To differentiate the Elite range, the exterior comes in silver/grey or silver/burgundy. The Birdsville Elite model range is built on the Fiat Ducati X251 chassis with a three-litre turbo diesel engine, electric win- dows and mirrors, cruise control, central locking, ABS braking and driver and passenger airbags. It is available in six- speed manual or auto- mated manual transmis- sions. Winnebago sales and marketing manager Max Mayo said their custom- ers were largely retired or about to retire. ''The Baby Boomers, and there are many of them, are fully intent on enjoying their retirement despite the recession,'' he said. ''They are not so con- cerned about their em- ployment prospects and while they realise they have lost some of their superannuation, they still retain much of it plus the equity in their home, which often is downsized to a smaller dwelling. ''The result is the best of both worlds --- the free- dom to travel and some- where to come back to on occasions.'' Sydney-built Birdsville motorhomes have metal frames, insulated walls and roof, a thick floor with galvanised metal under body protection and indi- vidual floor tiles. MARK HINCHLIFFE Double-decker answers holiday tow challenge DUAL PURPOSE: The Boatavan accomodates a full fishing rig as well as living space. THE conflicting challenges of towing a caravan and a boat at the same time have been answered by a Melbourne inventor. Theo Haas has designed and built what he calls the Boatavan, incorporating a lifetime of experience in everything from movie making to car assembly on the job. Haas has designed a two-level caravan that incorporates enough space to also house a complete 4.3-metre boat and trailer. He claims it is the best way yet to hitch a caravan and boat to the back of a family hauler or four-wheel drive and will showcase his breakthrough design at the Melbourne Leisurefest from October 1 to 4 at Sandown Racecourse in the hope of a run of early orders. Haas is a keen camper and fisherman and his objective was to create an all-in-one base for his recreational runs. ''I go fishing up in the far north, and I wanted to take both a van and a boat with me,'' he says. ''You don't want a little tinnie in croc- infested waters, so I needed to combine a decent-sized boat with a decent-sized van without it being too big or heavy. ''A motorhome wasn't an option, because I'm only away for maybe a month or so per year and wanted a regular vehicle to use at home. So the answer was a van towed by a normal four-wheel-drive. He spent years on the idea and creating a production-ready device and makes big claims. The end result is 6.8 metres long and weighs a total of 2800 kilograms, not too heavy for a mid-sized SUV to tow. ''Boatavan can carry a complete 4.3-metre boat and trailer on board and still offer comfortable living and sleeping quarters, much like any other van of its size,'' he says. The key to his Boatavan design is a split- level layout. He put a kitchen and bathroom on the ground floor of the caravan and moved the main living quarters upstairs, above the boat garage, with a tilt-up poptop to boost head- room. Haas says the complete boat-and-trailer rig are loaded into the van over integrated drop- down ramps at the rear of the van using an electric winch. Hatches in the side of the van provide access to tie the trailer down securely before closing a heavy-duty rear blind.
