The Mercury Cars Guide : September 26th 2009
10--- Classifieds 62 300 400 carsguide.com.au Saturday, September 26, 2009 Rich variety of SHADES OF GREEN: The Audi e-tron is an electric update of the R8 supercar. Someone forgot to tell the European car industry about the global economic meltdown. By Paul Gover REINVENTION: The Volkswagen E-Up! BATTERY CAR: The odd-looking Peugeot BB1 is designed to transport four people. THE only way to explain the sensation- al splurge of new luxury cars and high-performance sporties at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show is that the manufacturers are unaware of the current global financial crisis. Everything from a new Rolls-Royce and Ferrari to a born-again Mercedes-Benz Gull- wing and a four-door Aston Martin, and more, were on show at the Frankfurt Motor Show. And it seems the message has definitely been received, loud and clear, on the greening of global motoring. There are all sorts of electric cars, a new generation of hybrids, and even the promise of a complete hydrogen fuelling network in Germany within five years. And that's the contraction of Frankfurt '09. As always, Europe's biggest car show is shiny and fresh and packed and diverse, but there are two contradictory --- and possibly conflicting --- messages on motoring. One says we need to act now to end the petrol era of propulsion, and the other says every- thing is fine and normal service is being resumed at the top end of the business. To put things into perspective, compare the Lamborghini Reventon Roadster and the Peu- geot BB1. The outrageous Reventon looks like it came straight from Gotham City and will have a pricetag in the $1.5 million range. That buys you a 6.5-litre V12 engine, a top speed of 330km/h, and the exclusivity you only get from knowing that just 15 will be built. The odd-looking BB1 is a plug-in battery car designed to transport four people within a body that is just 2.5 metres long. Its tubular chassis was designed by Peugeot Bicycles, and it has two lithium-ion battery packs to give a range of 110km between charges. But what if you cannot decide between mean and green? Well, there is always the Audi e-tron, a volt-packed electric update of the R8 supercar. The good news for everyone from Frankfurt is that the worst of the global downturn seems to be in the past, and not just because of the exotica. All of those cars, and the cash for them, would have been committed long before the crisis triggered by the Lehmann Brothers' collapse. ''We have an increasing number of signs that the worst could be over. The more likely scenario is that we are at the beginning of a slow but consistent and long recovery,'' says Dieter Zetsche, head of Mercedes-Benz. ''My assumption is that we have seen the worst.'' So, what is worth a look from Frankfurt 2009? Here are my personal picks from the top end of town --- Aston Martin Rapide: The British brand knows it must do more than sports cars to survive outside the protection of the Ford umbrella. The Rapide will be costly at more than $400,000, and back-seat space is well short of a Porsche Panamera, but it looks right and deliveries will begin by the middle of 2010 as Aston also looks to AMG Mercedes for its future engine supply. 14 337Jono Photos depict models only.
