The Mercury Cars Guide : October 10th 2009
10--- Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, October 10, 2009 Ducati to release tamer monster IT is the ultimate traffic- carving, mountain- climbing thrill machine. Now Ducati has re- leased a tamer 795cc ver- sion of its hooligan 1100cc Hypermotard. Ducati importers NF Importers marketing coor- dinator Janja Gladanac said prices would be an- nounced closer to its re- lease date. ''We are expecting to have this motorcycle very late this year, or very early 2010,'' she said. It should cost about $14,000 based on the 1100 costing $18,495 which is the same as the Monster 1100 while the Monster 696 costs $13,595. Ducati should expect there to be some canniba- lising of some of their naked range, however Gla- danac said they believed most would be new buyers. The Hypermotard 796 will be unveiled at the EICMA Motorcycle Show in Milan in November. It is lighter and lower than the 1100, which should appeal to younger riders and women. The 796 weighs in at 167kg, partly due to its lightweight engine, but also from new top and bottom fork clamps and an updated frame layout. The new chassis elimi- nates almost all of the forged elements previ- ously used with the 1100. At 825mm the seat height of the 796 is 20mm lower than the 1100. The new Ducati 796 Des- modue L-twin engine con- forms to Euro 3 regula- tions and produces 59.6kW of power and 75Nm of torque. The bike is equipped with a quiet APTC wet clutch with a a slipper action that prevents rear- wheel lock-up on down- shifts. It comes in three colour schemes --- an ''urban- style'' dark finish with matte black tank and beak section, black frame and black wheels; matte white tank with matte black beak, black frame and black wheels; and 1100 look-alike red tank with matching beak and frame with black wheels. MARK HINCHLIFFE Scooter a beaming beauty SHINE ON: The BMW CD1-E electric scooter has a strong future. BMW is changing the way we think about scooters. By Mark Hinchliffe FUTURE commuters could be riding a two-wheeled elec- tric scooter with a roof. That is the vision of BMW which has developed the C1-E as part of a European study into traffic congestion. BMW produced a petrol C1 in 2001 and 2002, but scrapped it when some countries required riders to wear a helmet. Now the idea is back on the drawing board as BMW's contribu- tion to the European safety project eSUM along with scooter manufac- turer Piaggio. The BMW C1-E is powered by a Vectrix electric motor and has a raft of car-like safety features including a safety cell, rollover bar, front crum- ple zone and even a seat belt. The new version of the C1 has a more aerodynamic look with a lower centre of gravity, a raked wind- screen and a car-like boot. The Vectrix motor comes with a new compact and lightweight lithium-ion battery, but BMW has not ruled out a small-capacity low- emission internal combustion en- gine. BMW Motorrad Australia product communications manager Tim James said the C1-E was ''just a study about how to manage traffic at the moment and there are no plans for production''. However, BMW will use its find- ings to develop single-track vehicles. The cities involved in the eSUM project include Paris, Rome, Barcelo- na and London. BMW claims two-wheeled trans- portation would improve traffic flow, but has inherent safety problems. Their scooter would likely be fitted with some of the primary safety devices now being fitted to their motorcycles such as traction control, tyre pressure monitors and anti-skid brakes. BMW is also researching rider assistance systems designed to in- crease road safety such as traffic- light assistance and a warning sys- tem for wet weather, road obstacles, an approaching emergency vehicle, or sudden braking manoeuvres.
