The Mercury Cars Guide : October 31st 2009
Saturday, October 31, 2009 Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au ---7 Honda still keen on NSX supercar A GLOBAL green push has not dampened Hon- da's enthusiasm for a new NSX supercar. The company's new president Takanobu Ito says he has not given up on a replacement for the alumin- ium two-seater. Last December Honda axed its newest V10 supercar just months away from unveiling it because of the global financial crisis. Ito says there is still room for a supercar, but only if it is environ- mentally responsible. He told journalists at Tokyo a new NSX-type two-seater was possi- ble once the company's financial situation improves and it had the technology to build it. He says a new Honda sportscar should symbolise the company's technology ''maybe as a green supercar''. Ito was project leader for the NSX so a replacement is close to his heart. In the meantime, the company is concentrating on boosting earnings and sales and working through the global car crisis. However, it remains on course with a range of green-friendly cars at Tokyo, including the CR-Z con- cept hybrid and Skydeck hybrid. The 1.5-litre six-speed CR-Z is tipped to arrival locally next year with a pricetag around $45,000. Although not confirmed, the Sky- deck provides a pointer to the next- generation Odyssey. Despite his enthusiasm for an NSX replacement, Ito says Honda faces more pressing concerns like recovering from the current slump that has seen its Japanese domestic sales drop 30 per cent this year. Ito also remains pessimistic about the global financial crisis. ''We have not gone through the worst part yet,'' he says. Ito says that in North America, Honda's largest market, he was buoyed by the fact that some financial institutions were starting to see a return in earning levels. ''But we are in the business of selling cars to customers and when I look at real customers I don't think the economy has recovered to such an extend that the actual purchaser has an appetite for purchases or the security in spending money,'' he says. Ito says this not only applies to North America but Europe as well. In Japan, government incentives for scrapping vehicles had bolstered car sales but like other countries, Ito believes the local economy has not recovered enough ''to an extent that consumers feel secure''. ''If you ask me if demand is going to grow it's very difficult to predict,'' he says. ''I do think the Asian market has been impacted less for Honda than other markets.'' But Honda is focusing on main- taining momentum. ''The company as a corporation has to take some actions like making sure that we will have sufficient stable earnings even against a background of the rapid decline in sales levels,'' he says. Ito believes that electric cars will remain a curiosity until battery technology improves. He's reluctant to put a timeframe on when Honda will deliver an EV passenger car. ''To be honest I don't know when that's going to happen . . . we are doing extensive research into EVs. ''But I don't think the EV is the solution to everything.'' Ito says even the latest generation batteries are still heavy, expensive and do not give sufficient range to overtake petrol powered cars.
