The Mercury Cars Guide : October 31st 2009
8--- Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, October 31, 2009 End of road looms for the fatigue blues HI-TECH: Mercedes-Benz S350 CDI makes great strides in reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The newest luxury sedan in the Mercedes- Benz range is using a touch of colour to take the stress out of driving. Neil McDonald reports BUYERS of the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class model will not only get a raft of new safety and hi- tech safety and engineering features but the cars interior ambient light- ing is designed to stop drivers from becoming drowsy at night. The ice-blue hue is one of three ambient fibre optic lighting choices that filter a soft light around the cabin, the others being a soft white and amber. But Mercedes-Benz Australia product manager, Gordon Jones, says the ice-blue colour performs a safety function as well as being asthetically pleasing. The particular colouring is known to reduce melatonin levels, which induces fatigue, he says. If the blue hue does not help, the S-Class uses what it calls Attention Assist which recognises if the driver is becoming drowsy. The blue theme continues in other parts of the new S-Class. Like the latest E-Class sedan, the S350 CDI model gains the Mercedes- Benz BlueEfficiency package to fur- ther reduce fuel consumption and emissions. With the mid-life makeover, the big sedan gets a visual freshen up, more technology, safety and creature comforts, but at a higher cost. Prices for the eight-model S-Class range have risen between $5500 and $15,900 depending on the model. But Mercedes-Benz Australia boss, Horst Von Sanden, says the company had added more gear into the cars to compensate. Von Sanden says the average price rise equates to around 8 per cent but buyers get 15 per cent more value because of the new equipment not seen previously on the S-Class. As before, buyers have the choice of six engines, a V6 turbo-diesel and five petrol engines of V6, V8 and V12 configurations. The eight model lineup kicks off with the 200kW/350Nm S350 petrol V6 and 173kW/540Nm S350 CDI BlueEfficiency at $214,900. The CDI model was previously called the S320. The rest of the range consists of the 285kW/500Nm S500 V8 and flagship 380kW/830Nm S600 long wheelbase biturbo V12, which cost $289,900 and $402,900. Long wheelbase versions of the petrol S350 V6 and S500 V8 add $18,000. The two AMG models, the S63 AMG and S65 AMG long-wheelbase are $380,900 and $482,900. As befits the AMG performance brand, the S63 develops 386kW/ 630Nm and the 12-cylinder S65 devel- ops 450kW/1000Nm. Among the changes for the 2010 model are new camera and radar- based driver assistance systems and adaptive high-beam assist. High beam assist recognises on- coming vehicles and then adjusts the headlights to ensure the best possible beam intensity and range without dazzling other motorists. A new addition is a special pedes- trian detection function for the Night View Assist Plus system, which is optional on the S350. As soon as the system detects pedestrians on the road ahead they are highlighted on the dashboard display to make them more notice- able. Visually the S-Class joins Audi with daytime LED running lights and some minor cosmetic updates to sharpen the styling. The company has also tweaked the car with lower rolling resistance tyres, modifications to the steering, fuel pump and seven-speed gearbox to reduce fuel consumptions and C02 emissions. Despite its powerful green creden- tials and performance, Mercedes- Benz expects the turbo-diesel S-Class to account for just 10 per cent of sales. The 173kW/540Nm S350 CDI uses 7.7 litres/100km and produces green- house gases of 202 g/km. The CDI gains an enclosed engine compart- ment to isolate noise, as well as underbody paneling and the seven- speed automatic gearbox disengages when the car is stationary to save fuel. As expected of the top-end Mer- cedes, the S-Class is packed with new safety features that are appearing in other high-end European models. These include bi-xenon headlights, lane change assist, Bluetooth inte- gration, Brake Assist Plus, radar cruise control, intelligent lighting system, parking sensors with a park- ing guidance system and reversing camera, blind spot recognition, and torque vectoring brakes which limits understeer by independently brak- ing the rear wheels.
