The Mercury Cars Guide : November 14th 2009
2--- Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, November 14, 2009 car of the year 2009 Best of the ELECTRIC: The Toyota Prius leads the way in petrol-electric standard, making it an easy nominee for COTY. The field for the 2009 CarsGuide Car of the Year is as good as any in the 13-year history of the contest. Paul Gover gives us the play-by- play on all the cars in this years line-up DRIVE SAFE: The Volvo XC60 is the only SUV in the 2009 COTY contest. BRUTAL: The Nissan GT-R was an instant pick for this year's COTY contest. GODZILLA leads the field for COTY 2009. The brutal Jap- anese Skyline GT-R was the first and unanimous choice for this year's Carsguide Car of the Year shootout, claiming the first of 10 shootout spots for the two-day judging to decide the best car of this year. It is followed into the field by a polar opposite, the green-focused third- generation Toyota Prius hybrid. But that's what you expect for the Carsguide COTY contest. It's all about the best of the best, regardless of what they cost or who buys them. Things get much, much tougher once the judging gets underway, but making the field is the first hurdle when the lineup for 2009 in Australia includes more than 100 arrivals as diverse as the baby Suzuki Alto and the outrageous Porsche Panamera. Some newcomers arrive too late for judging, including the Toyota Prado SUV and the price-leader Proton S16. but still the lineup is as good as there has been in the competition. Following the Skyline and Prius are a diverse first group of first-five favourites. They are the Volvo XC60, Mercedes- Benz E250 and the Hyundai i30CW. The final five will be revealed next week, ahead of the final judging, and announcement of the COTY winner on Friday, November 27. Judging time is when the contend- ers are matched against their top-10 rivals and their individual class com- petitors. They are also evaluated against the same sort of strict judging standards set by showroom shoppers on everything from value and safety to comfort, performance and efficiency. Nothing escapes the focus of the Carsguide COTY judges, a nine- member panel who are the only coast- to-coast crew to evaluate the best of the best for 2009. And they have more than 150 years of combined experience on the job. There is lots more to come on COTY, but here are the first five, the way we chose them for the 2009 shootout: www.thecarmart.com.au 6211 0566 14 Derwent Park Rd, Derwent Park David Strang 0404 724 986 Mark Patterson 0417 025 936 Todd Jackson 0419 514 956 Rob Sylvester 0418 124 226 (Finance) Easy on-site finance available 14791TH 96 Proton Wira XLi Sedan 1.6lt auto, p/s, electrics, central locking. $3995 00 Mitsubishi Lancer CE2 GLXi 1.8lt auto, p/s, a/c, electrics, lovely wagon, low kms. $8995 98 Holden Astra TR City 1.6lt manual, p/s, a/c, alloys, central locking, value. $3995 98 Ford EL Falcon XR6 4.0lt manual, p/s, a/c, electrics, alloys, great road test! $7995 02 Hyundai Getz TB GL 1.5lt auto, p/s, award winning reliability. $6995 00 Holden TS Astra Hatch 1.8lt manual, p/s, a/c, alloys, top condition, reliable, 115,000km. $8995 99 Hyundai Excel X3 GLX 1.5lt manual, p/s, a/c, 08/10 rego, 4 door sedan, 124,000km. $4995 99 Ford Laser GLXi Hatch 1.8lt, p/s, a/c, 139,000km, hard to find in auto. $7995 98 VT Commodore Acclaim 3.8lt auto, p/s, a/c, central locking, great value. $5995 96 Mitsubishi Lancer GL Coupe 1.5lt manual, p/s, ideal first car, popular. $3995 91 Holden VN Exec Commodore 3.8lt auto, p/s, a/c, alloys, tidy, well maintained, value. $2495 99 Daewoo Lanos SE Hatch 1.5lt manual, p/s, a/c, 150,000km, 5 door, great value. $3995 $8995 $8995 02 Holden XC Barina SRI 1.8lt manual, p/s, a/c, alloys, tint, sporty, economical, only 90,000km, SAVE $1000. 00 Holden Commodore VSIII Ute 3.8lt auto, p/s, a/c, alloys, tungsten, looks great!
