The Mercury Cars Guide : November 14th 2009
Saturday, November 14, 2009 Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au ---3 car of the year 2009 best vie for honours DARK HORSE: The Hyundai i30 provides high value, which earns it a wildcard place in COTY. REFINED: The Mercedes E250 is the pinnacle of luxury in this year's COTY contest. NISSAN GT-R (Price: $159,000; Engine: 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged, 24-valve V6; Output: 357kW/56400 revs, 588Nm/ 3200-5300revs, 12.4L/100km, 298g/km) GODZILLA is back with more punish- ing performance than anything else to hit the road in 2009, as well as a value price-tag which puts its go-faster rivals in the shade. It's impossible to ignore, incredible to drive, and an instant pick for the COTY contest. HYUNDAI i30 CW (Price: from $29,890; Output: 85kW/ 4000revs, 255Nm/1900-2700revs, 6L/100km, 159g/km) The wagon version of the previous COTY winner only made the field on a wildcard, but it was close even before it was included. Value is the bottom line, but it's also a baby wagon in a world of SUVs, has diesel efficiency, and shows the sort of effort Hyundai is making to break out of the cut-price Korean car trap. TOYOTA PRIUS (Price: $53,500; Output: 73kW/ 5200revs, 142Nm/4000revs, 3.9L/100km, 89g/km) The poster car for the green movement is now much more than a science experiment. It drives more like a real car, is more efficient and quieter and comfortable, yet still leads the way on petrol-electric hybrid power for the real world. It must be a COTY contender. VOLVO XC60 D5 (Price: from $64,450; Output: 151kw/4000revs, 420Nm/1500-3250revs, 7.6L/100km, 201g/km) The only SUV in the field packs everything from an efficient diesel engine to a mix-and-match cabin and benchmark safety systems. Volvo is doing its best to make cars safer and drivers better, with everything from City Safety to Lane Assist. But safety is not the only judging standard when it's COTY time. MERCEDES-BENZ E250 (Price: from $96,900; Output: 150kW/4200revs, 500Nm/1600-1800revs, 5.3L/100km, 139g/km) The new standard for mid-sized and mid-priced luxury, it's a must-have contender for COTY. It's not as fast as Godzilla or as economical as the Prius, but the E is the car which will set the bar for luxury and overall refinement.
