The Mercury Cars Guide : January 9th 2010
2— Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com .au Saturday, January 9, 2010 Buyers offered more from BUDGET BRAND: The Geely MK. Chinese carmakers are putting the pressure on the motoring world this year with many marques offering models from the bargain basement. Neil McDonald and Neil Dowling report HYBRID: The Toyota Camry. ON THE RADAR: Ford Kuga SUV. B ARGAIN basement cars will delve ever deeper this year with the arrival of the first Chinese sedans and hatches. The budget Geely brand — pro- nounced jee-lee — is the headline act next month with a range that will shake up the sub-$15,000 market. First up are the Corolla-sized 1.5 -litre MK sedan and hatch, which will be priced from $13,000. Initially 1000 cars will arrive, to be distributed by the successful John Hughes Group in Perth. Geely, which owns NSW trans- mission maker DSI and is close to buying Volvo from Ford, will follow up the MK with the smaller Panda hatch. More budget Chinese models are coming with Great Wall Motors passenger cars arriving in the first quarter and Chery cars and commer- cial vans expected later this year. Apart from the Chinese, about 100 new models will hit showrooms this year, including a new wave of full- electric and hybrid cars. Here’s just a sample of what’s around the corner. Audi AFTER a stellar 2009 for Audi things will continue this year with the A5 Sportback next month, S5 Sportback in July, A8 in the second half and R8 Spyder around October. Alfa Romeo THE new Giulietta arrives in November. There are two petrol engines (a 90kW 1.4 -litre turbo petrol and an upgraded MultiAir version at 127kW) and two diesel engines (78kW 1.6 -litre and a 127kW 2.0 -litre). Expect Volkswagen Golf pricing. BMW WE’VE seen them overseas and now they will roll out locally. First the 5 Series Grand Turismo arrives in March, the X1 soft-roader in the second quarter. Perhaps the most eagerly awaited is the new 5 Series sedan, around June, to be followed by the wagon around October. Dodge The Caliber hatch gets a modest refresh around June. Fiat THE baby Fiat 500 gets its electric two-stage convertible roof this month. Heavily based on the hardtop version, the Fiat 500C gets a 74kW 1.4 -litre petrol engine that has a claimed fuel figure of 6.3 litres/100km. Prices start at $28,990. The fabric roof can be partially open up to 60kmh. Ford Ford’s not saying but the Kuga — pronounced cougar — is big on their radar. Acclaimed as one of the best SUVs in its class, the Kuga could replace the ageing Escape. The VW Tiguan-rival gets a 2.0 -litre turbo-diesel but may later add the 2.5 -litre turbo- petrol five-cylinder. www.thecarmart.com.au 6211 0566 14 Derwent Park Rd, Derwent Park David Strang 0404 724 986 Todd Jackson 0419 514 956 Rob Sylvester 0418 124 226 (Finance) Easy on-site finance available 15216dev 95 Mazda 121 ‘Bubble’ 1.3lt, manual, great first car.
