The Mercury Cars Guide : February 6th 2010
2--- Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, February 6, 2010 Families and retirees It seems the wanderer's lifestyle is about to make a comeback. Neil McDonald follows the path of the nomad GREY nomads are dusting off their cardigans, adjust- ing their glasses and hit- ting the comeback trail. After watching their superannu- ation nest eggs disappear overnight because of last year's global economic meltdown, many are back in the market for a caravan or motorhome. Industry experts say recreational vehicle sales are set to return to the highs not seen for three years. With sales this year tipped to recover beyond the peak of 2007, Gerry Ryan, the president of the Recreational Vehicle Manufacturers Association of Australia, says the economic recovery is filtering through to retirees. Caravan and motorhome sales hit 19,200 in 2007 and despite last year's gloomy outlook, sales still peaked around 19,000. ''We're confident the market will hit 20,000 this year,'' Ryan says. Confidence in the caravanning and recreational camping industry took a big hit when the bottom fell out of super funds. ''If you lost $100,000 or $200,000 from your super, that was essentially what people spent on a van and a towing vehicle,'' he says. O N S T - NS O All prices include GST.
