The Mercury Cars Guide : February 6th 2010
12--- Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, February 6, 2010 Turning Japanese with eco-car A new engine will add better fuel economy to the 2010 Mazda6 but the advantage may not be available for buyers in Australia. Neil McDonald reports COMFORT FACTOR: Mazda believes the updates on the new Mazda6 make it a fantastic ride for all on board. We still have a car to appeal to our customers looking for economy... the changes have improved the ride quality and enhanced passenger comfort' AFUEL sipping 2.0-litre engine des- tined for Japanese versions of the Mazda6 will bypass Australia. Mazda has just introduced the eco- four into its revised 6 range in Japan to take advantage of a 50 per cent government tax break for eco-cars. The direct injection MZR DISI 2.0-litre engine has a combined fuel econ- omy figure of 7.4 litres/ 100km compared to 8.4 litres/100km for the cur- rent 2.5-litre engine in the 6. Apart from better econ- omy, the new direct injec- tion engine is also down on power, developing 112kW/189Nm compared to the 2.5-litre four's 125kW/226Nm. However, Mazda Australia spokesman, Steve Maciver, says there are no plans to add the 2.0-litre to the updated lineup, which reaches local showrooms around May. He says Mazda customers can go diesel if they are chasing ultra-frugal fuel economy. ''Our diesel delivers 5.9 litres per 100km,'' he says. ''We still have a car to appeal to our customers looking for economy.'' Maciver says the company took the decision to move up in capacity from the previous- generation 6's 2.3-litre engine to 2.5 and it was not likely to reverse that thinking. Mazda already has plans to combat the imminent arrival of Toyota's economical Camry hybrid. Next year it will introduce new direct injections across its range. These engines will deliver upwards of a 30 per cent fuel economy im- provement. The new 2.0-litre Sky-G petrol and 2.2-litre Sky-D turbo-diesel will roll out across the brand, mated to new six-speed gearbox. However, it is still un- clear which models will get the high-tech engines. Apart from getting some visual tweaks the Mazda6's power steering has been upgraded for better feedback. The suspension settings have also been revised for better handling and straight-line stability at higher speeds. Mazda says the changes have improved the ride quality and enhanced passenger comfort. On the outside the car gets the corporate Mazda family face with a five-point front grille in line with the Mazda2 and RX-8. There are new alloys and new exterior colours. Inside, the centre console stack has a smooth, glossy, piano-black finish and chrome high- lights.
