The Mercury Cars Guide : February 13th 2010
Saturday, February 13, 2010 Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au ---13 Console king off to Silverstone DAN Holland doesn't have a car but the 25-year- old Melbourne university student is still the quickest console racer in the country. Holland's skill on the PlayStation Gran Turis- mo game put him across the line first in last week's national final of the GT Academy tournament. There was a lot more than bragging rights at stake. The online game has given players a chance to test the next-gen Gran Turismo game while driving a Nissan GT-R. It also gave the winner a spot as the Australian representative at a five-day GT Academy racing boot camp at Britain's Silverstone circuit. It is there that a team of real racers will put the national winners through mental and physical aptitude tests to determine if their console mastery translates into in- car capability. The opportunity is enough for Hol- land to consider deferring his uni- versity courses. It's an amazing opportunity, really,'' he says. University starts March and I have to leave on February 27. If I actually make it to the top two at Silverstone, I have to stay there another eight weeks. If I get that far, I'll probably defer and chase the dream.'' Holland became interested in motorsport after watching Mark Webber in the late 1990s, but a lack of funding restricted his racing to the screen. I started racing Gran Turismo in 2004 and I've been playing it a couple of hours a night pretty much since then.'' Holland had been in the top 10 in the global leaderboard and dominated the time trial at the national final to start the eight-lap winner-take- all race from pole. On the second lap I went from first to fourth, but I managed to overtake a few in the next couple of corners and got up to first about three laps later,'' Holland says. Then the two guys running behind me came together and it was carnage, no one could get through. I had a fairly easy run after that.'' Holland hopes his tennis background helps with the physical testing at Silverstone. The first two or three days are just fitness training and I play a bit of tennis, so I'm reasonably fit,'' he says. If I can get past that, then I'm in with a shot.'' The two Silverstone finalists judged to have the talent, aptitude, fitness and perseverance will undergo an intensive driving and racing programme to prepare them to qualify for an international racing licence. The driver with the most potential will then race a full season in the European GT4 Cup in a Nissan 370Z prepared by RJN Motorsport. CRAIG DUFF US safety test blow for Holden Colorado DENTED IMAGE: The American version of the Holden Colorado after failing the US roof crush test. T HE Holden Colorado workhorse ute has failed a critical safety test to determine its roof strength. It received a ''marginal'' rat- ing in the latest Insurance Institute for Highway Safety roof crush test program in the United States. The Colorado --- sold in North America as a Chevrolet --- also rated ''poor'' for side impact protection despite hav- ing side curtain airbags as standard. In Australia, the Colorado has neither curtain or side torso airbags. The GM pickup was one of five utes that underwent roof strength and side impact test- ing. Nissan earned the highest rating of ''good'' for its popular Navara, while the Ford Ranger was ''acceptable'' for roof crush protection. The Navara is the only pick- up in the group to earn the highest rating. The two other utes were the Toyota Tacoma and Dodge Dakota, which are not sold here. The rating is based on insti- tute research that shows occu- pants in rollover crashes ben- efit from stronger roofs. Vehicles rated good must have roofs that are more than twice as strong as the mini- mum required under US safety standards. ''As a group, small pickups aren't performing as well as small cars or small off-roaders in all of the institute's safety tests,'' according to the insti- tute's senior vice-president David Zuby. ''None of the ones we tested is a top-notch performer across the board.'' In the US rollovers are much more common for off-roaders and pickups than for cars. Almost half of all pickup occupants killed in crashes last year were in utes that rolled over. This compares with 58 per cent of deaths in off-roaders and 25 per cent in cars. In the roof strength test, a metal plate is pushed against a corner of a roof at a constant speed. New ute rollover stan- dards are now being phased in for the US that will require manufacturers to increase the roof strength. Both the Navara and Ranger also achieved a ''good'' rating for side impact. In the US, the Navara has standard head curtain and side airbags while the Ranger has a combined head and torso side airbag. In Australia neither the Navara or Ranger are avail- able with curtain or side ai- rbags. The Colorado is sourced from General Motor's Thailand factory.
