Although available in other markets, a Golf 4Motion wagon would add too much com- plexity to the local model line-up, according to VW Australia executives. Price and positioning could also be a problem, with Tiguan being the company's star all-wheel drive off-roader locally, says VW Australia managing director, Anke Koeckler. Golf's new wagon on course The Volkswagen Golf swings into town and is sure to make a mark, Neil McDonald reports FAMILY FRIENDLY: The 2010 Volkswagen Golf 118TSI wagon is expected to sell well. 'NO one was more surprised than Volkswagen when potential cus- tomers flocked to see the Golf wagon at the Sydney Motor Show two years ago. ''We received plenty of good feedback,'' says VW Australia managing director, Anke Koeckler, says. This prompted the company to put the Golf wagon on its ''must-have'' list. Roll forward two years and the Golf Mark VI wagon has finally hit our shores. Even though the wagon segment is relatively small in Australia, Koeckler is confident the Golf wagon will be just as successful as the hatch. ''Also, other competitors have given up this segment so there is an opportunity,'' she says. Toyota no longer sells the Corolla wagon, leaving only the Peugeot 308 and Hyundai i30 wagons as Golf wagon's main rivals in the small car segment. VW Australia has never had a small wagon in its local Golf line-up but Koeckler is confident it will do well. ''We are more conservative than risky. We don't want pressure on the car in the market- place,'' she says. The wagon is a big seller in Germany and although it has conservative local sales expec- tations a lack of direct rivals could help spread the word about the family oriented Golf. It's also a small car with medium car aspirations. So much so that VW hopes buyers looking at the Ford Mondeo wagon, Skoda Octavia wagon and Mazda6 wagon may cast an eye over the Golf wagon. Koeckler believes it will appeal to small families and outdoors types. The wagon commands a $2000 premium over the equivalent hatch models and shares the hatches Trendline and Comfortline specifi- cations and equipment. Prices start at $26,990 for the entry 90TSI, rising to $36,490 for the 103TDI model. Buyers have the choice of four models, a 90TSI manual and seven-speed DSG, 77TDI manual or DSG, the 118 TSI DSG and the 103TDI DSG. Like the hatch, Koeckler expects the 118 TSI wagon to be the volume seller. ''It has hit a sweet spot with hatch buyers and we expect it to do the same for the wagon,'' she says. Visually the car is the same as the hatch from the B-pillar forward. The big changes are reserved for the back. Compared to the hatch the wagon has 505 litres of luggage space with the rear seats folded and up to 1495 litres with the rear seats folded flat. The wagon is built in Puebla, Mexico which also builds the Jetta and the Beetle. Performance Automobiles Corner Argyle & Burnett Streets www.performanceautomobiles.com.au Inner re. The new Boxster.
