The Mercury Cars Guide : February 20th 2010
Saturday, February 20, 2010 Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au ---15 Whincup revs up for desert BIG CHALLENGE: Jamie Whincup is looking forward to switching from Ford to Holden, when the 2010 V8 Supercar series starts in Abu Dhabi today. with JAMES BRESNEHAN VICTORIAN Jamie Whincup will launch his attempt to become only the second man to win the Australian Touring Car or V8 Supercar championship in both a Ford and a Holden when the 2010 series starts in Abu Dhabi this weekend. The series kicks off with a Middle/ East double, the cars racing at the new $1.5 billion Yas Marina circuit, and then backing up next week at the Bahrain International circuit. Whincup is looking to follow in the tyre marks of Hall of Fame driver Norm Beechey, who won the 1965 ATCC in a Ford Mustang and then won it again, in 1970, in a Holden Monaro GTS 350. Whincup's appearance in a Holden in Abu Dhabi is his first in a Commodore since Phillip Island 2005, his last event for Tasman Motorsport before he moved to TeamVodafone. Whincup's TeamVodafone team- mate Craig Lowndes also is making his return to driving Holdens, having won three V8 supercar titles in a Commodore in 1996, 1998 and 1999 with the Holden Racing Team before moving to Ford in 2001. Abu Dhabi is Lowndes' first race in a Commodore since Bathurst 2000, and he is rated as a strong chance to win the 2010 title in his super-quick, Triple Eight-prepared Commodore. The team that will give the Vodafone lads the most trouble with be Holden Racing Team, and its hot- shot pair Will Davidson and Garth Tander. The HRT pair finished second and third respectively for the champion- ship last year, and have the cars to win the title. The Yas Marina track has been a hit with the Aussie teams. Michael Caruso, of Garry Rogers Motorsport, who is sporting new Fujitsu livery for 2010, said the facility was spectacular. ''Probably the biggest talking point is driving out of pitlane through a tunnel,'' he said. ''Everyone's looking forward to driving through it. ''It's so different to what we're used to.'' The Yas Marina Circuit is part of a marina-based development that also includes theme parks and a water park as well as residential areas, hotels and beaches. † Free rego, free CTP and free stamp duty offer only available on Octavia 2.0 TDI and Octavia 1.8 TSI Liftbacks and Wagons purchased and delivered from a koda Dealer between 12th December 2009 and 28th February 2010. * Bluetooth phone kit not available on 6sp manual RS; Ski & Luggage Box will replace it. **Offer available on koda vehicles purchased and delivered from a koda Dealer between 12th December 2009 and 28th February 2010 while stocks last.
