The Mercury Cars Guide : February 27th 2010
24--- Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au Saturday, February 27, 2010 Supercars' chance to stretch legs Mark Winterbottom with JAMES BRESNEHAN B AHRAIN will enter the V8 supercar history books this weekend by becoming the longest race of the championship, second only to the Bathurst 1000. For the first time, the V8 supercars will use the longer 5.41km Formula One grand prix layout of the Bahrain International Raceway, making it the longest circuit event on the supercar championship --- Bathurst (6.213km) not being a permanent race track. In the three previous events in Bahrain, the shorter 3.6km paddock circuit has been used by the Aussie V8s, but the supercars will have the chance to stretch their legs on the long and wide Bahrain GP course. Bahrain is the second leg of the season-opening tour of the Middle East. Abu Dhabi hosted the first round last weekend when TeamVodafone's Jamie Whincup was at his dominant best. Whincup took a clean sweep of the Yas V8 400, winning both races of the season opener at the Yas Marina circuit. Having switched from Ford to Holden this season, TeamVodafone's twin Commodores enjoyed an almost perfect debut. ''The car was bullet-proof,'' Whincup said. ''Having a brand-new car, a brand- new circuit and to almost have a perfect weekend, well that's as good as it gets.'' The team has worked on improving the twin Commodores of Whincup and Craig Lowndes, who finished fifth and third in the two races to be third outright in the championship. ''We have five or six little issues that you can't see from the outside that were going to have to improve, but it's all pretty good right now,'' Whincup said. Ford Performance Racing's Mark Winterbottom goes to Bahrain sitting in second place in the championship. Winterbottom's strong perform- ance at Yas Marina, finishing second in both races in his Orrcon Steel FPR Falcon, gave him second on the leaderboard, ahead of Lowndes, Shane van Gisbergen and James Courtney. ''It was a pretty promising start to the season, to campaign a new car on a new track and make the gains we did is a real credit to the team,'' Winterbottom said. ''As a driver I have to probably tune myself a little to the changes but that will come quickly. If we can continue the progress in Bahrain --- which is a circuit that has been good to us in the past --- then I think we should be able to come home looking pretty good.'' www.djmotors.com.au email@example.com Glenorchy 275 Main Road, Glenorchy Phone: 6 213 3 315 Brian Anning 0418 531 853 Chris Wakefield 0400 635 446 Allan Gebel 0428 729 659 Hobart 1a Brisbane Street, Hobart Phone: 6213 3300 Warren Amos 0417 544 829 Jason Spong 0408 473 756 Easy finance available with DJ Financial Services 07 MITSUBISHI Triton GLX 3.5 litre V6, 5-speed manual with limited slip diff., dual airbags, power windows, CD, Bluetooth, rear ladder rack, remainder of warranty.
