The Mercury Cars Guide : March 13th 2010
18--- Classifieds 62 300 400 carsguide.com.au Saturday, March 13, 2010 Conversion caution urged BE WARY: One reader who's considering converting his diesel-driven 2002 Nissan Patrol to an LPG system, has been advised to talk to others who've already gone through the process. firstname.lastname@example.org with GRAHAM SMITH Q We are planning to do an extended trip around Aust- ralia in our 2002 Nissan Patrol 4.2-litre turbo-diesel towing a 1600kg off-road camper-trailer. I m thinking of fitting it with an LPG system, but I ve heard differing opinions on doing it. Some say LPG can be harmful to the engine, others say it isn t. What do you say? Ray Gentle email You need to be very careful when having your diesel converted to dual-fuel, converting diesels is quite a new science compared to the conversion of petrol engines and there isn t the same level of experi- ence there to call on. It does work, and can cut fuel consumption, but it s also quite easy to increase the engine s power to the point where the engine can be damaged. Speak to the converters involved and ask them if you can talk to other owners who have made the conversion so you can get their opinion. Q Every now and then the engine warning light on our dealer-serviced 2002 Subaru Out- back comes on with a loss of power. At its last service they mentioned it might be an oxygen sensor that needs replacing, but did not seem very interested in the problem. Is this a common problem? Should I be worried? Mike Stewart email Without wishing to send you into a blind panic I would have it diag- nosed and fixed. It is likely to get worse and eventually could bring the car to halt altogether, leaving you or your family stranded. It is likely to be a sensor as the dealer suggests, perhaps a crank angle sensor, and they should be able to identify it and replace if needed. Q After hearing about Ford checking balljoints I took my 2004 Territory Ghia in to have it checked. The dealer told me they needed replacing but as they didn t have any stock it would be a couple of weeks before they could do it. Less than 100km later one of the front balljoints broke and the lower control arm came out as I was rounding a corner near home. To say that I am furious that they let me drive away in a car that was clearly unroadworthy would be the understatement of the year. What can I do about it?Graeme Horvath email First, you should count yourself lucky that no one was hurt in the incident. Second, you should ex- press your displeasure to the dealer, and to Ford. Third, you should demand that Ford repairs any dam- age your car has sustained as the result of the failure. Q I am considering selling my 2007 VZ Monaro CV8, which has only done 3100km since I bought it new. What do you think of selling it privately, at a Shannons auction, or at a standard auction house? If I sold it at auction what reserve price should I put on it? Or should I wait for another 12 months hoping the economy improves? Jim Thompson email I d be hanging on to it for a while yet, the economy is likely to improve and with it so will the demand for classic cars. Added to that I don t think the VZ Monaro has acquired the true classic status it is likely to acquire over time, even though yours has only a few Ks on the clock. It would be worth $40,000-$45,000 right now. Q I would like to do more travelling, towing an 850kg Jayco camper we own. My current carisa2008FGGT,whichIwas going to sell and buy a Territory diesel, but with the release of that not due until late 2011, I was wondering if there is a gas conver- sion kit available for my GT? Robert Lucas email The Australian LPG Warehouse has developed a JTG liquid-injection kit for your car. Q My two-week-old 3.0-litre SIDI V6 VE Berlina is doing 9.8 L/100km on mainly country driving. Can I expect any better than this? Also, the speedo shows four km/h below actual speed and the dealer says this is normal. My previous car was a VY Holden Calais and the speedo was spot-on. What do you think? Trevor Browning Moyarra, Vic Holden claims the Berlina will aver- age 9.3 L/100km so I would say yours is in the ballpark, but bearing in mind that is just two weeks old, it should get a little better once its run-in. As for the speedo, if it is showing a lower speed than the actual speed then it is illegal and you should take it back to the dealer to be fixed. Q Just prior to Christmas my 2005 Falcon XR6 was slug- gish and running very poorly. A mechanic advised me that water had got into the transmission from the cooling system and the gearbox was shot. It needed a complete rebuild at a cost of about $2500. Ford rejected my request for assist- ance, but after reading that this is a common problem I believe that Ford should be assisting with the cost of repairs. Any advice? Mark Truman email Consider fitting an external trans- mission oil cooler to your car. That will bypass the problem oil cooler in the radiator and you shouldn t have any further issues. Q How much should I be asking for my 1973 six-cylinder Fal- con XA station wagon? It s done 220,000km, runs well and is in good condition, and I have all the servic- ing records including the purchase documents. Werner Golla email If it s in really good condition it would be worth up to $6000, but it s not a very collectable car. New noise monitoring system to hit road UNDER SURVEILLANCE: A new noise sensing camera system for trucks, to be trialled in Victoria, is behind a push to enforce national noise emission standards. A NOISE sensing camera system developed to monitor heavy vehicles is to be trialled in Victoria this month. Victorian Roads and Ports Minister Tim Pallas says the new noise cameras will be used for road surveillance and enforcement in selected areas, where truck engine brake noise is deemed to be an issue. Not all heavy vehicles emit excessive noise, but loud engine brakes are inappropriate in built-up areas and can affect a community's quality of life, Mr Pallas says. The new noise cameras will allow VicRoads to enforce the heavy vehicle national noise emission standards across Victoria and to reduce noise from engine brakes with non- compliance ultimately resulting in suspen- sion of a truck's registration. The cameras have been tuned to sense overly noisy trucks take a photo, record the noise level of the vehicle as well as the time and place. If over the permitted on-road noise level standards, the vehicle owner will receive a notice of non-compliance. The truck would be then need to pass an EPA test or be de-registered.
