The Mercury Cars Guide : March 20th 2010
Saturday, March 20, 2010 Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au ---13 Rebate no incentive to trade up THRIFTY: The Suzki Alto, above, has the lowest fuel consumption of all non-hybrid models in Australia TWEAK: The soon-to-be- released Falcon four-cylinder engine. I SEE the importers are again clam- ouring for goverrnment rebates or incentives to remove older cars from the road. I understand the reasoning behind this push, however not every- one has the financial means to buy a new car (even a Suzuki Alto or Proton S16) and some people prefer their old cars. I think my 1993 Volvo 940 GLE is still superior to a cheap Malaysian or Indian import. I have ABS brakes and driver SRS. I also have SIPS (Side Impact Protection System) yet this is the type of car that would be targeted under this type of scheme. I wonder what other readers think of this proposal. Richard Fulwood email Greenhouse furphy IT IS well for car importers to claim new cars run cleaner, greener than older cars, but do they ever recognize the greenhouse gases produced in the manufacture of a new car? No! First there s diesel burned in the mining, transporting and shipping of iron ore, then the energy in the production of steel. What about the plastics, paint and numerous other items that make up the car? More and more greenhouse gases, possibly much more than the new car pumps out of its exhaust over the life of the car. Then, the consumer who is sucked in by the cash for clunkers scheme is probably abandoning a useable car for a new one which has cost all the above greenhouse expense, putting himself/herself into debt and wearing the depreciation in its value for some years. My 22-year-old car with 456,000km on the odometer is comfortable, reliable, economical and the depreciation is all done and gone. It is well maintained and safe and has no rust.Robert Stuchbery email CARMAKERS do consider the whole- of-life contribution their vehicles make to greenhouse gases, but it s a fact that tailpipe emissions are the easiest to adjust. Any 22-year-old car is a gross polluter compared with a current car, and that s without thinking about safety and economy. The cash-for-clunker schemes have worked around the world to move people into newer and better cars and Australian importers and makers want to get people thinking about the alternatives. Fuel claim fury IT WAS only a few months ago when Suzuki was shot down by Toyota for advertising that the Suzuki Alto had the lowest fuel consumption in Australia, and were made to reprint lowest fuel consumption for a non Hybrid . Well it looks like Toyota has had to eat their words now. Ford s very smart Fiesta advertisement shows the Fiesta eclipsing a poster of a Toyota Prius seems to say a lot more the just the facts. Toyota doesn t have the guts now to go at it against Ford for doing the same as Suzuki did. Just another case of corporate bullying, even when the little guys are only trying to say it as it is. Paul M email Wind a drag HOW much does the aerodynamics of the vehicle effect fuel consumption? What about when looking at new car fuel consumption figures, as its not something they can factor in?Damien email WIND drag makes a huge difference, which is why the super- efficient Toyota Prius and Honda Insight hybrids look so similar. Generally, carmakers are aiming for a 10 per cent improvement in economy through aerodynamics. Ford's four upgrade WHEN they upgrade the Falcon engine with the four cylinder will they do a facelift at the same time? Or, because they have no money, will it be a small one? Geoffrey Braithwaite email WE RE only expecting a minor tweak for the engine swap. buyamitsubishi.com.au AWARD WINNING PRODUCTS, OUTSTANDING SERVICE AND AUSTRALIA'S BEST NEW CAR WARRANTY. † * ^ ‡ To see all of the March offers visit buyamitsubishi.com.au or call 1300 13 12 11 See mitsubishi-motors.com.au for further information.
