The Mercury Cars Guide : March 20th 2010
Saturday, March 20, 2010 Classifieds 62 300 400 • carsguide.com.au ---15 Clutch wear and tear firstname.lastname@example.org with GRAHAM SMITH REPLACEMENT: Clutch wear and tear is becoming more common in cars, including the 2005 Hyundai Elantra. CHECK: A buyer asks about oil leaks in the 2006 Holden Astra. OVERHEATED: A writer has had issues with the RAV4's cooling system Q My 2005 Hyundai Elantra has had two clutches, one at 17,600 km and another at just over 46,000 km. Hyundai agreed to cover the first replacement under warranty as a good will gesture'', but have refused warranty coverage for the second. They said that clutches are wear and tear'' items and, as such, not covered. It was suggested my driving style could be a factor to the premature clutch wear, but I've owned a number of manual cars in my 43 years of driving, and several have done over 75,000 km or more without needing to have a clutch replaced. Heard of any similar problems with the Elantra? George McDowall email We haven't had any significant reports of premature clutch wear on the Elantra, but it is an issue that seems to be creeping into the car business. We've had numerous reports of prema- ture clutch wear on a number of models, so it could be concluded that carmakers are cutting back on clutches to save money. Two clutches in less than 50,000 km is not fair wear and tear, and I would have Hyundai justify to me that it isn't a component problem and their responsibility. Q The headlining in my 1993 Holden Calais has dropped, how can I repair it? Ken Pelle email Its a moulded headlining panel and the backing foam is probably crumbling, which makes it hard to fix. The way out is to replace it. Q My 2004 VY Holden Commo- dore wagon has given me no trouble, but my husband thinks it is getting too old and will soon start to need some work. I think it will keep going forever, just so long as we maintain it well. What do you think? Kathy Cooney email Its impossible to predict, but I would tend to agree with you. I don't see any reason to sell it; its only six years old and providing you maintain it, there's no reason to think it won't continue to give you good service for many years to come. Q I am considering buying a 2006 Holden Astra with only 14,000 km on clock from a dealer. The vehicle inspection has revealed an oil leak in the gearbox a leak at lower cover''. How can I be sure that the problem has been satisfactorily fixed? Tania Lamb email Its hard to be sure without driving it for a time and observing for the leak. Before taking delivery check the paper- work to see that the dealer has attended to the problem, and keep a copy of the vehicle inspection report for later reference if needed. Its not unusual for cars to develop oil leaks, most do. Q While my 2006 Toyota RAV4 was in for service last week I asked the dealer to check for a leak that was obviously coming from the cooling system due to the colour of the coolant. It was found to be the water pump. My car has only done 20,000 km and I was told this should not happen at such a low mileage. Do you think I have reason to take this matter further with Toyota? John Gilbert Miami, Qld If it was under warranty it would most certainly be covered, but I assume your warranty has run out. Even so there is no good reason for the water pump to need replacing after 20,000 km, ex- cept for a faulty part, so I suggest you take it up with Toyota. They should at least pay for the replacement part. QWhat can I do to keep cats off my clean car? Alan Salmon Leongatha, Vic They're usually looking for somewhere warm to curl up and go to sleep. I'm not aware of anything made specifically to deter them There are sprays you can get from nurseries that claim to deter cats and dogs from areas around the house. O T - OM All prices include GST.
